もし誰かが皆さんに何の身に覚えのないことを指摘し、そのことを責め立てるとしたら皆さんのはどう思われますか。ましてやそのことにより実際に処罰を受けなければならないとなったらどうでしょうか。私達は「そんなことはたいしたことじゃない」と達観することなどできませんでしょう。きっとありったけの言い分をもって自分の潔白を主張しますでしょう。皆さんの家族や友人までもが皆さんと共に、その潔白を支持するでしょう。今週、この国ではどれだけの訴訟裁判がなされるのでしょうか。人々は「これはお前の責任だろう」と言われることに耐えられないのです。そうです、それは私達には極めて耐え難いことなのです。

「していない罰」を受けられますか。

私達は創世記より最初の夫婦、アダムとエバを見ました。彼らは神様から無尽蔵の祝福を受け、エデンの園に暮らしていました。しかし、唯一、与えられた制限、すなわち「これだけは食べてはいけない」と言われていた一本の木の実を食べてしまいました。このことに対してアダムは神と妻エバに、エバは蛇へとその責任を転嫁しました。このことがこの夫婦の互いの信頼関係を著しく悪くさせただろうということを私達は容易に想像できます。そうこの問題は完璧な環境であったエデンの園で起きました。私達はここから問題とは完璧な環境でも起こるという教訓を得ました。
そんな彼らに息子が与えられました。人類最初の子です。彼はカインと名づけられました。エバはこの子の誕生を喜び、「わたしは主によって、ひとりの人を得た」と言いました。エバが言いました「人」という言葉は「カイン」を意味する言葉で、またそれは彼の夫、アダムの名を意味するものでもありました。そう、エバは自分に責任を転嫁するような信頼の置けない夫に代わる存在として、その長男の誕生を喜んだのです。言うまでもなく、このエバの思いもこの夫婦の関係に影響を与えたであろうことが想像されます。
やがてアダムとエバには二人目の息子が生まれました。彼らはその子にアベル、すなわち「むなしい」を意味する名前をつけました。なぜ、彼らはわが子にこんなに悲しい名前をつけたのでしょうか。夫婦の原則として「二人は一体となる」と聖書が記しているにも関わらず、アダムとエバの間に子、カインが割って入ることにより、その原則がないがしろにされ、ゆえに生じた夫婦の問題、ひいてはそれが家族の問題として彼らの間に爪痕を残してしまったのかもしれません。
もし当初の責任転嫁の性質がこの夫婦にそのまま残っていたとしたら、それは子供たちにも継承されていったことでしょう。その証拠として、彼らの長男カインは神から自らのいたらなさを指摘された時、大いに憤り、神から顔をそむけ、弟を野原に連れ出し、彼を殺害したのです。カインの問題の原因は彼自身にあったのですが、彼はあかたもその責任は弟、アベルにあるかのようにして、彼の命を奪いました。そう彼は自らの責任転嫁の代償として血を分け合った弟の命を奪ったのです。
先週、読みました箇所で神様はカインに四度、たずねています。『なぜ、あなたは憤るのですか』（６）『なぜ顔を伏せるのですか』（６）『弟アベルは、どこにいますか』（９）『あなたは何をしたのです』（１０）
ここでカインは四度、「問題はカインにも神にもなく、この問題の原因は自分にありました」と言い表すチャンスがありました。しかし、彼は開き直り、自分の非を認めることはありませんでした。自分の非を認めず、あのことこのことにその責任をなすりつける、「わたしは悪くないのだ」という彼の思い、それは頑なであり続けたのです。
そのような暗澹たる状況で先週のメッセージは閉じられました。主にある皆さん、これらのことは聖書の冒頭５ページに記されていることなのです。しかしながら、そこに私達が今日、抱えている諸々の人間の問題の原因を見出しませんでしょうか。問題はこの問題の原因に私達が気がつかないことであり、ましてや、その問題が自分にはあるのだということは露だに思わず、アダム、エバと同じように問題はあいつ、こいつにあるのだと思い、相手も同じように考えていますから、問題はこじれにこじれていきます。またたとえ、これらのことに気がついても、はたして実際にどうしたらこの問題は解決できるのだろうかということを私達が知らないということも問題なのです。
さて、その後のカインはどうなったのでしょうか。神様はカインに話しかけます。10主は言われた、「あなたは何をしたのです。あなたの弟の血の声が土の中からわたしに叫んでいます。11今あなたはのろわれてこの土地を離れなければなりません。この土地が口をあけて、あなたの手から弟の血を受けたからです。12あなたが土地を耕しても、土地は、もはやあなたのために実を結びません。あなたは地上の放浪者となるでしょう」（創世記４章１０節―１２節）。
この時以来、私達もカインと同じく、本来おるべき神のもとから離れて生きる、地上の放浪者なのです。私達が行く先々で私達が願うような収穫を得ることはとても難しく、私達は今も徒労の中に生きています。カインはこの言葉を受けて、神にこう答えます。
13カインは主に言った、「わたしの罰は重くて負いきれません。14あなたは、きょう、わたしを地のおもてから追放されました。わたしはあなたを離れて、地上の放浪者とならねばなりません。わたしを見つける人は誰でもわたしを殺すでしょう」。（創世記４章１３節‐１６節）
カインは神様に問われて、やっと自分がしてしまったこと、それゆえに彼が背負わなければならないことを知り、思わず彼は嘆いたのです「わたしの罰は重くて追いきれません」。彼は弟を殺しましたが、今度は私が誰かに殺されるかもしれない、その恐れと彼は生きなければならなくなりました。
カインが「わたしの罰は重くて負いきれません」と放った一言は、以降、そのまま保留され、彼と同じ叫びを無数の人たちが心に持ち続けることになりました。そして、長い長い年月が経ち、この叫びが日の目を浴びることになります。その叫びをもう一度、光のもとにさらしたのは使徒パウロでした。彼はカインの父アダムがしたことを持ち出してきて、こう書き残しました。
12このようなわけで、ひとりの人によって、罪がこの世にはいり、また罪によって死がはいってきたように、こうして、すべての人が罪を犯したので、死が全人類にはいり込んだのである（ローマ５章１２節ー２１節）。
そうです、これまで三週にわたりお話ししてきました「責任転嫁」、自分は悪くはないという思い、これを聖書は「罪」といいます。パウロはその罪がはいってきた時のことをここに書いています。ここに記されている「ひとりの人によって、罪がこの世にはいり」とはカインの父、アダムのことです。そう、彼があの禁断の実を食べた瞬間、その源流から罪が流れ始め、それは私達の魂にも流れるものとなりました。まさしく、それは「全人類に入り込んだ」のです。私達がアダムとエバのこと、カインとアベルの物語を聞きます時に、それはこれまで聞いたことがない真新しいことではなく、どこかで私達が見聞きしていること、また自分自身が経験したことがあることとして、それを聞きます。なぜでしょうか、そうです、それはまさしく、パウロが書いておりますように、その罪が私達の心にも入り込んでいるからです。
そしてパウロは「一人の人によって罪が入り込んだ」という、その事実に対して、「もう一人の人」についてこう書き残しました。
15しかし、恵みの賜物は罪過の場合とは異なっている。すなわち、もしひとりの罪過のために多くの人が死んだとすれば、まして、神の恵みと、ひとりの人イエス・キリストの恵みによる賜物とは、さらに豊かに多くの人々に満ちあふれたはずではないか。16かつ、この賜物は、ひとりの犯した罪の結果とは異なっている。なぜなら、さばきの場合は、ひとりの罪過から、罪に定めることになったが、 恵みの場合には、多くの人の罪過から、義とする結果になるからである。17もし、ひとりの罪過によって、そのひとりをとおして死が支配するに至ったとすれば、まして、あふれるばかりの恵みと義の賜物とを受けている者たちは、ひとりのイエス・キリストをとおし、いのちにあって、さらに力強く支配するはずではないか。18このようなわけで、ひとりの罪過によってすべての人が罪に定められたように、ひとりの義なる行為によって、いのちを得させる義がすべての人に及ぶのである。19すなわち、ひとりの人の不従順によって、多くの人が罪人とされたと同じように、ひとりの従順によって、多くの人が義人とされるのである。20律法がはいり込んできたのは、罪過の増し加わるためである。しかし、罪の増し加わったところには、恵みもますます満ちあふれた。21それは、罪が死によって支配するに至ったように、恵みもまた義によって支配し、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストにより、永遠のいのちを得させるためである（ローマ５章１２節ー２１節）
ここでパウロは「アダム」と「イエス・キリスト」を対比しています。すなわち、創世記に記されているように、ひとりの罪過のためにこれまで多くの人が死にましたが、イエス・キリストを通してわたしたちは命を得るというのです。ひとりの人の罪により、全ての人が罪に定められるようになったが、イエス・キリストはその人の罪を義と変え、その義は全ての人にもおよぶようになったのだとパウロは言います。
カインは「わたしの罰は重くて追いきれません」と言いました。そうです、彼は父アダムから受けた自分の犯した罪の罰に圧倒されたのです。自分がしたことに対して、自分はそれを償うことなどできないと叫んだのです。しかし、パウロはここでそのアダム以来、私達の魂にあるこのカインの叫びに対して、イエス・キリストが光を照らしているというのです。そうです、それはイエス・キリストの十字架です。
十字架について私達は色々な思いがあり、また神学者も牧師たちもその十字架について色々な説明をするでしょう。私もその一人ですが、最近、私には心から離れない思いがあります。それはとてもシンプルなことで「イエス・キリストは自分がしていないことの罰を受けた」ということです。アダムがした責任転嫁は「自分がしたことを人になすりつける」ということです。しかし、このお方はそれとは全く逆のこと、「自分がしていないことに対する罰を自ら進んで受けた」のです。そう、それは罪を無理やりかぶせられたのではなくて、彼は自らその罪を背に負い、十字架に磔にされるために、自分の足でそこに向かわれたのです。そして、このキリストが背負われた罪はあなたの罪だと聖書は語り続けているのです。そう、それは私達には到底、負いきれない罪です。
もう一年以上前になります。オフィスで仕事をしていた私に妻が電話をかけてきました。ある方の家で持たれていたバイブルスタディーを終え、帰ろうと住宅街の道から一般道に出ようとしたときに、駐車していた車がバックをしてきて、よけ切れずに私達の車にぶつかったというのです。そのことで相手ともめているというので、すぐに現場に向かいました。到着すると、右側のフロントガラスが壊れている私達の車と、左後ろがへこんでいる相手の車がありました。
妻は一般道に出ようとしたら、その車が急にバックをしてきて、よけ切れなかったと言いました。しかし、相手は妻が停車している彼の車に突っ込んできたというのです。その時、妻の車には一人の教会の姉妹と次男が同乗しており、この二人にもその時の様子を聞きますと、彼らもその車が自分達のほうに急にバックしてきてぶつかったといいます。そもそも道路脇に停車している車にわざわざぶつかりにいくということはありえない話で、明らかに彼がこちらに過失をなすりつけようとしていることが分かりました。
もちろん、こちらの落ち度であればそれは認めますが、明らかに彼は嘘をついていました。そこで、それはおかしいということをしばらく話したのですが、ラチがあかず、彼は自分は被害者だといい続け、「とにかく保険会社に解決させろ」と言い、その場を去って行きました。後日、保険会社からは「心配するな。全てあちらの保険会社に請求しているから」という連絡を受けました。
それは誰かが負傷するというような大きな事故ではありませんでした。車が互いにへこんだということで、無傷であったことを主に感謝しました。しかし、正直告白しますとあの時、私はかなり強い言葉で彼と話をしました。なぜなら「していないこと」を「している」とされたからです。そう、その出来事を通して「していないこと」を「している」とされることがこんなにも不快で、こんなに耐えがたきことなのだということを体験したのです。

主にある兄弟姉妹、イエス・キリストが十字架に磔にされたということは、ご自身には何の見覚えもない、ご自身がしていないことの罰を受けたということです。しかも、その時、イエス様はそのことに対してご自身の潔白を一言も、そう、一言も主張しませんでした。まさしくイザヤがそのことが起きる７５０年も前に預言した様がイエス様のその時の姿です。
6われわれはみな羊のように迷って、おのおの自分の道に向かって行った。主はわれわれすべての者の不義を、彼（イエス・キリスト）の上におかれた。7彼（イエス・キリスト）はしえたげられ、苦しめられたけれども、口を開かなかった。ほふり場にひかれて行く小羊のように、また毛を切る者の前に黙っている羊のように、口を開かなかった。8彼（イエス・キリスト）は暴虐なさばきによって取り去られた。その代の人のうち、だれが思ったであろうか、彼（イエス・キリスト）はわが民のとがのために打たれて、生けるものの地から断たれたのだと（イザヤ５３章６節‐８節）。
そうです、イエス様はこの時、我々すべての者の不義（罪）を背負われて、十字架に向かいました。それはイエス様の不義ではないのです、アダムの性質を持つ我々がなした諸々の不義を全てイエス様は背負われました。イエス様は自分がしていないことの罰を受けたのです。イエス様は裁判にかけられました。それは不正な裁判でした。しかしたとえそれが不正なものでも、イエス様は自らの潔白を主張することができたでしょう。しかし、イエス様は一切、自らを擁護する言葉を言わなかったのです。「それはおかしい」とか「私は無実だ」というようなことを一言も言うことなく、ほふり場にひかれていく小羊のように、イエス・キリストは実際にほふり場に行き、十字架に手足を磔にされ、殺されたのです。誰のためですか。私はあえて「私達」とは言いません。なぜなら、それはどうしても他人ごとの言葉となりうるからです。そうです、イエス・キリストは誰の罪のために十字架にかかったのですか。それは「あなた」のためです。
イエス様はこのことが起こる数時間前、ゲッセマネの園で血がしたたるようなさらにイエス様は十字架の上でおよそ信じがたいことを言われたのです「父よ、彼らの罪をおゆるしください。彼らは自分で何をしているのか分からずにいるのです」と。真実を申し上げましょう。この「彼ら」の中には「あなた」もいるのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、ゆえにカインが放った「わたしの罰は重くて負いきれません」という言葉に対して、聖書はこう私達に語りかけるのです。「心配するな。あなたの罰をあなたが負う必要はない」と。
先にお話ししました。問題は最高の環境で起きたと。ということは、私達はいかなる場所でも問題を抱えうるものです。そうです、そこに私達の心がある限り、問題はあります。さらに私達が無力なことは、この問題は次の世代にも確実に継承されていくということです。そうアダムとエバの罪は確かにその子へと受け継がれました。この連鎖は続きます。しかし、ここにはそれを断ち切る力があります。そうです、それはイエス・キリストの十字架の愛です。自分がしたことのない、私達がしたことの罰を全て身に追われ、父よ彼らをおゆるしください、彼らは何をしているのか分からずにいるのですと言われる、私達が持ち合わせていない神の愛の力です。
カインは「私の罰は自分では負いきれない」と言いました。イエス様は言われました。「誰でも重荷を負うて苦労している者は私のもとに来なさい。あなたたちを休ませてあげよう」と。この言葉に真実であり続けたイエス・キリストはまさしく私達が追いきれない罰を私達に代わり、全て負ってくださり、その罰を受けてくださったのです。
アダムとエバがあの実を食べた時に彼らの心に「恥」が生まれたと聖書は記録しています。またお話ししているようにその時以来、「罪」が私達人間の心に入りました。以来、私達は今もこの二つを有しながら生きています。
イエス・キリストは犯罪人とされ十字架にかけられました。磔にする犯罪人にかける情けなどありません。ゆえにイエス様は身ぐるみはがされ、まさしく全裸のような姿で十字架に磔にされたことでしょう。そう、アダムとエバはあの時、自らを恥、自分の体をいちじくの葉で覆ったのです。イエス様はその自らの恥を覆うべきものすらもはぎとられて、両手両足に釘が打たれたのです。誰のためですか。あなたのためです。あなたの「恥」とあなたの「罪」の罰を受けるべく、キリストはあなたの「恥」とあなたの「罪」を負われました。
今日の落穂に「罪と恥を取り去られた者」について書きました。そう、この二つは私達が高学歴であるとか、高収入を得ているとか、厳しい修行を耐えぬきましたというようなことで得られるものではないのです。この二つは我々のために「していないことをした」とされることをよしとしてくださったキリストの驚くべき愛を受け入れること以外に私達が得ることができないものなのです。
最初の人、アダムから罪は入りました。しかし、後の人、イエス・キリストにあって私達は神の前に義とされるようになったと書いたパウロは、その筆を進めていくにあたり、その絶大な価値が心底、心に響いてきたのでありましょう。彼はこう書いたのです。驚くべきことは、このパウロの言葉は彼だけの言葉ではなく、そのまま私達が人生に寄って立つ言葉となるのです。
31それでは、これらの事について、なんと言おうか。もし、神がわたしたちの味方であるなら、だれがわたしたちに敵し得ようか。32ご自身の御子をさえ惜しまないで、わたしたちすべての者のために死に渡されたかたが、どうして、御子のみならず万物をも賜わらないことがあろうか。33だれが、神の選ばれた者たちを訴えるのか。神は彼らを義とされるのである。34だれが、わたしたちを罪に定めるのか。キリスト・イエスは、死んで、否、よみがえって、神の右に座し、また、わたしたちのためにとりなして下さるのである。35だれが、キリストの愛からわたしたちを離れさせるのか。患難か、苦悩か、迫害か、飢えか、裸か、危難か、剣か。36「わたしたちはあなたのために終日、死に定められており、ほふられる羊のように見られている」と書いてあるとおりである。37しかし、わたしたちを愛して下さったかたによって、わたしたちは、これらすべての事において勝ち得て余りがある。38わたしは確信する。死も生も、天使も支配者も、現在のものも将来のものも、力あるものも、39高いものも深いものも、その他どんな被造物も、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける神の愛から、わたしたちを引き離すことはできないのである（ローマ８章３１節―３９節）。
ためわらず、このイエス・キリストを私達の主として人生を歩みましょう。そう、それは私達の負いきれない罪を神の前に悔い改め、実際に２０００年前にあなたのためにイエス・キリストが十字架にかかられたというその事実を信じて受け入れ、新しい人生を始めることなのです。お祈りしましょう。
Are you willing to accept a punishment for sins you have not committed?

We learned about Adam and Eve, the first husband and wife, in Genesis. They lived in the garden of Eden receiving inexhaustible blessings from God. However, they ate the fruit which God forbid them to eat; the only restriction they had in the garden. After this incident, Adam blamed both God and Eve for what he had done. And Eve blamed the snake for her mistake. We can easily imagine that this couple’s mutual trust was damaged by blaming each other. It happened in the garden of Eden under the perfect environment. We now learn that problems can be created even in a perfect environment.
Then a son was given to them. He was the first child of mankind. He was named Cain. Eve was happy to have her son and said “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” The name “Cain” means “man”. And Eve’s husband’s name “Adam” also has the same meaning. Well, Eve was pleased with the birth of her son because she was able to have a replacement for her unreliable husband who blamed his faults on her. Without saying, Eve’s distrust of her husband must have affected their marital relationship.
Then Adam and Eve had a second son. They gave the name Abel to the child. It means “vanity”. I wonder why they named him such a sad name. The bible describes the relationship between a husband and wife as,“ two become one flesh”. In spite of this principle, the rule was despised because Cain, their first son, got involved between Adam and Eve. This distorted relationship created the problem to the couple. Furthermore, this scarred the family relationship.
If the couple had kept having the characteristic of blaming others, it would have been inherited in their children. When Cain, who was the first son of Adam and Eve, had his fault pointed out by God, he got very angry and turned his face away from God. Then he took his brother to the field and murdered him. Cain’s fault was his own, but he took his brother’s life as if Abel had a responsibility for it. Yes. The price of blaming others was killing his own brother.
Last week, we read these verses written about Cain. God asked four questions to Cain “why are you angry? (6) Why is your face downcast? (6) “Where is your brother Abel?” (9) “What have you done? (10)
When Cain was asked by God four times, each time he had a chance to confess by saying,“It was not either Abel’s or God’s fault. It was my fault” But Cain assumed a defiant attitude and didn’t admit his fault. He shifted his responsibility onto others and never said that he was wrong. He had been very stubborn.
Last week, I ended the message at this point with no hope in sight. Brothers and sisters in Christ, everything I said last week are written in five pages from the beginning of the Bible. But don’t you notice that the cause of all problems we have today is there. The biggest problem is that we don’t realize what the root cause of our problem is. What is worse, we never realize that our problems are in our own hearts. Like Adam and Eve, we accuse other and believe that others are at fault. And people around us also think the same way. So a problem becomes more and more complicated. Even if we were to find that problems are in us, we wouldn’t know how to solve them.
Let’s see Cain. What happened to him after murdering his brother? God told him “10The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” (Genesis4:10-12)
Since then, although we were created to live with God, we, like Cain, have also been wanderers on the earth. This is why it is difficult for us to get the kind of results we want. Even now we are still struggling for nothing. Cain replied to God in this way.
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;I will be a restless wanderer on the earth,and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.16So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden. (13-16)
When Cain was accused by God, he finally knew his awful act, and realized that he had to carry the burden as a result of his behavior. He grieved and said, “My punishment is more that I can bear.” He murdered a younger brother, but now he had to live with the fear of being killed by someone.
“My punishment is more than I can bear” Cain’s grief didn’t come to an end here. Instead, innumerable people continue to have such cries in their hearts like Cain. After a long period of time, finally, this topic was recognized and brought to the surface. It was the apostle Paul who pointed out this fact. He paid attention to what Adam, Cain’s father, had done. He wrote.
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned–(Romans 5:12)
For the last three weeks, I talked about human nature, “shifting the responsibility onto others”. This way of thinking that “ it is not my fault” is called sin in the Bible. Paul wrote how sin came into one person. It said, “just as sin entered the world through one man” . Man in here means Adam who is the father of Cain. At the moment when Adam ate the forbidden fruit, sin definitely began to flow from him. It also flows into our hearts. Surely, sin entered all mankind. The story about “Adam and Eve” or ”Cain and Able” doesn’t sound new to us. It is because the story reminds us something we already knew or something we had experienced before. Why do we think so? As Paul pointed out, it is because sin already exists in our hearts.
Against the fact that sin entered the world through one man, Paul wrote about another man who brought something to the world.
15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 6 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! 18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. 20The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:15-21)
Paul compares Jesus Christ with Adam here. As it is written in Genesis, the trespass of one man resulted in the death of many people. But we can gain life through Jesus Christ. Paul said that all people became sinners through the sin of one man, but Jesus Christ justified our sins and made us righteous. And everyone can have his righteousness.
Cain said, “my punishment is more than I bare.” Yes. He was overwhelmed by the punishment for the sin he committed, and his sin was from his father Adam. He cried out that he couldn’t compensate for what he had done. But Paul wrote that Jesus Christ gave the light for us who have the same cry like Cain in our hearts from that time on Adam. Yes. This is the cross of Jesus Christ.
We have various thoughts about the cross. Theologians and pastors will explain the cross in many different ways. I am one of them. Recently, I have been thinking about something that I can’t get out of my mind. It is very simple. It is that “ Jesus Christ received a punishment for sins he hadn’t committed”. Adam didn’t take responsibility for what he had done. Instead he blamed others, Jesus did quite the opposite. He was willing to accept a punishment for sins he had never committed. He did it not by force but with his will, and he walked to the place where he was crucified. The Bible keeps telling us that Jesus bore our sins. Surely, we cannot bear our sins at all.
Let me share about my experience. It happened a little over a year ago. One day, my wife called me while I was working in my office. She was driving on the way home from her friend’s house after Bible study. She was about to come out to the main street from the residence area, when one car, which was parked on the street, suddenly backed up and hit her car. She wanted me to come to the scene because she had an argument with the driver. When I arrived there, I found my car with the right front glass window broken and the other car with a left rear dent.
My wife told me that she couldn’t avoid this car because he backed up all of a sudden. But the driver said that my wife hit his car which was parked on the street. One of the church members and my younger son were in the car with my wife and witnessed the accident. Both of them said that the car backed up suddenly and hit our car. Who wants to hit a car which is parked on the street? I understood that the driver wanted to lay the blame with my wife.
Of course I would have apologized if she had been to blame. But evidently, this driver lied. So I told him that my wife had no fault. But the driver never admitted his fault and kept saying that he was the victim. He wanted the insurance company to take care of this matter. Then he left the scene. Later, my insurance company contacted us to tell us not to worry. They said that they were billing the driver’s insurance company for damage.
It was not a big accident. No one was injured. I thanked God that there weren’t any injuries. It was just a minor accident and both cars had only a minor dent. But to tell the truth, I forcefully argued with the guy. I was so mad because my wife was considered as the one who responsible, although she wasn’t to blame at all. Through this incident, I experienced unpleasant emotions and it was so unbearable to be accused as one who did something wrong in spite of being innocent.
What would you do if someone accused you of something you had never done this morning? Furthermore, if they came to a wrong conclusion for what you hadn’t done, what would you do? Can you simply ignore it? We would probably try to prove our innocence as much as we can. Your family and your friends may support you to prove it. I wonder how many law suits are processing in this country this week. People don’t like to be told “it is your fault.” It is unbearable.
Brothers and sisters. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ means that Jesus accepted a punishment he never committed. On top of that, he didn’t even say a single word to prove his innocence. He never argued. This is Jesus, who was already prophesied by Isaiah 750 years before it happened.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. (Isaiah 53:6-8)
Yes. Jesus bore all of our sins and walked towards the cross. Jesus was not a sinner. Jesus was burdened by all the transgressions we committed. We are all sinners and succeeded this character from Adam. Jesus accepted punishment for sins he did not commit. He was put on the trial. It was not a fair trial. Jesus could have argued to prove his innocence even if the trial was unfair. However, he didn’t say anything to defend himself. He didn’t say even words such as, “ It is not right” or “I am innocent” He was taken to the place to be executed like a lamb to the slaughter. His hands and feet were nailed and he was killed. Who did he die for? I wouldn’t say that it is for “us” because it sounds like that it is not my business. So I dare to ask you again. Who did Jesus die for? Yes, it is for you.
Jesus prayed so earnestly in the garden of Gethsemane several hours before it happened. He also said something unbelievable on the cross. “ Farther please forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” I will tell the truth. You are included among them for whom Jesus asked for forgiveness.
Brothers and sisters. Cain said “My punishment is more than I can bear” But the Bible says, “ Don’t worry. You don’t have to pay your penalty.
As I told you before, the problem was created even in a perfect environment. It means that we have problem anywhere. As long as we have hearts, we create problems. We are so helpless because we have no way to prevent sin from spreading to the next generation. The problem originated from Adam and Eve and was inherited by their children. The chain of sins continues. But now, we know there is only one way to stop it. That is Jesus’ love on the cross. Because of his love, he willingly accepted all our sins although he had never committed any sin. His love made him say, “ forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing” . This is the power of God’s love.
Cain said that his punishment was more than he could bear. Jesus said, “Come to me all you are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus has been honest to keep his promise. That is why he took the burden of our sins in place of us and accepted the punishment for us.
The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve became ashamed for the first time when they ate the forbidden fruit. At the same time, sin came into their hearts. Since then, we, human beings, have both “shame”and “sin” to this day.
Jesus was crucified as a criminal. People don’t pity a criminal. For that reason, his clothes were removed and he should have been almost naked when he was crucified. Remember Adam and Eve. They covered themselves with fig leaves. How about Jesus? Even his clothes were stripped off. His arms and feet were nailed. For whom did he accept such an awful punishment ? He did it for you. In order to accept the punishment for our shame and sins, Jesus bore both of them.
I wrote an article about “a person whose sin and shame were removed” on the column in the program this week. High education, high income or hard training don’t help for removing sin and shame. But accepting Jesus’ incredible love is the only way to remove them because Jesus dared to accept our sins in place of us.
Sin started from the first man, Adam. But Paul wrote that we are justified to be righteous before God through Jesus Christ who came to the world later. I can tell how much Paul was awed by this precious Jesus’ salvation while writing Romans. The word Paul wrote also became the word for us to rely on.
1What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 3 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:31-39)
Don’t hesitate to believe in Jesus as our Lord and walk with him. Repent your sins you can’t bear, and believe and accept the fact that Jesus died on the cross 2000 years ago Let’s start a new life by believing in Him. Let’s pray.
