イスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンは快楽、富、異性、これらを徹底的に求めました。彼にはそれらを徹底的に試みる財力がありました。そのような意味で彼はこれらのことにおいて山頂に立ったのです。その山頂に立てばきっと自分の心は満たされると思ったのです。しかし、その山頂から見えた風景は彼が期待したものではありませんでした。彼はそこで何を見ましたか。彼はそこでそこにいたるまでの過去を、すなわち後ろを振り返ったのです。彼は言っているではありませんか「そこで、わたしはわが手のなしたすべての事、およびそれをなすに要した労苦を顧みた」と。そして、あらためて自分以外に誰もいない、そう自分以外に快楽、富、異性にこれほどに投資した者はいない、そんな一人として山頂で回りを見回したのです。その時に彼の心を支配したものは何だったのでしょうか・・・。

ソロモン：頂点に立った者が見た光景
２０１７年３月２６日
日本のプロ野球チーム、オリックス・バファローズの二軍監督に田口壮という方がいます。この方はアメリカのメジャーリーグで活躍し、二つのチャンピオンリングを持っています。田口選手のワイフがクリスチャンで、その後、彼も米国にいる間にクリスチャンとなりました。アメリカのプロスポーツのチームには専属のチャプレンがいますが、彼はそのチームのバイブルスタディーで聖書を学んでいた時についてこう言っています。
その日もバイブルスタディーをして家に帰りますと、奥さんが「今日は何を学んだのか」と聞きます。まだ英語に不慣れだった田口選手はどういうわけか皆が「生鮭」のことばかり話していたというのです。そうです、彼はイスラエルの三代目の王、ソロモンとサーモンを律法と生ものを間違えて聞いてしまいました。冗談のような本当の話です。
日本には「ソロモン流」というテレビ番組があり、「ソロモンの財宝」を探すということがテーマとなっている映画があります。そうです、このソロモンは色々なところで有名なのです。何が有名か、テレビ番組や映画で言われているようにその比類なき「彼の知恵」と「彼の財産」です。そう、それらは全て神が彼に与えたものだと聖書は記しています。
ソロモンは先週、お話ししましたダビデとバテシバとの間に生まれた子で、彼はダビデの跡を継いで王となりました。彼に神は他の人は持ちえないような知恵と莫大な財産を与え、ソロモンはそれらを用いて幾つかのことを試みました。
まず彼はその人生において快楽が自分の人生にどんな意味をもち、そのことにより心がどれだけ満たされるのかということを試みました。そう、彼は自分が与えられている富、名声、知恵の限りを用いてこれらを試みました。それは私達が「ちょっと贅沢して外食しました」というようなこととは比較にならないことで、彼には富が無尽蔵にありましたから、彼は快楽を徹底的に求めることができました。そして、まずその手始めとして彼は酒をもって自分の肉体を元気づけようと試みたのです。
1わたしは自分の心に言った、「さあ、快楽をもって、おまえを試みよう。おまえは愉快に過ごすがよい」と。しかし、これもまた空であった。2わたしは笑いについて言った、「これは狂気である」と。また快楽について言った、「これは何をするのか」と。3わたしの心は知恵をもってわたしを導いているが、わたしは酒をもって自分の肉体を元気づけようと試みた。また、人の子は天が下でその短い一生の間、どんな事をしたら良いかを、見きわめるまでは、愚かな事をしようと試みた。（伝道の書２章１節－３節）。
きっとイスラエルの王、ソロモンの日常はこんな毎日だったのではないかと思います。すなわち、王として、国に起きている諸々のことに日夜、向き合い、時には他国の王と膝をつき合わせて話し、重要な決断を幾つもする日々・・・。心身ともに疲れた自分を元気づけたい、そのために彼は酒に手を伸ばしました。
聖書は酒を飲むことを禁じていません。当時の酒と言えば、それはぶどう酒のことで、イエス・キリストはカナの婚礼で、水をブドウ酒に変えるという奇跡を行いました。イエス様は婚宴という喜ばしい場所からワインが失われることをよしとされませんでした。
キリスト教徒であるということは、人生の楽しみと喜びを捨てて禁欲的になることだと思われる方達が時々いますが、それは大きな間違いで、キリスト教徒になるということは思い描くこともなかった喜びと楽しみを人生で見出すことです。
あの最後の晩餐でイエス様も弟子たちもブドウ酒を飲みました。パウロは愛弟子テモテに健康のために「ブドウ酒を飲みなさい」と勧めています。しかし、それらに加えて、酒によって起こる問題というものにも聖書はさらに多く触れています。
聖書の中で一番最初に飲酒について記しているのは創世記９章で、大洪水を逃れたノアがブドウ酒を飲んで酔っ払い、天幕に裸で眠ってしまったということがありました。その姿を見た息子は父を笑い、酔いから覚めて、そのことを知ったノアは我が子を呪いました。かつて「ノアはその時代の人々の中で正しく、かつ全き人であった」（創世記６章９節）と言われていたのです。その彼は飲酒によって、本来の彼ではなくなりました。
またレビ記にはこのような警告が記されています。レビ記１０章８節-１１節8主はアロンに言われた、9「あなたも、あなたの子たちも会見の幕屋にはいる時には、死ぬことのないように、ぶどう酒と濃い酒を飲んではならない。これはあなたがたが代々永く守るべき定めとしなければならない。
10これはあなたがたが聖なるものと俗なるもの、汚れたものと清いものとの区別をすることができるため、11また主がモーセによって語られたすべての定めを、イスラエルの人々に教えることができるためである」。
アロンとは祭司です。すなわち神の御用にあたる者です。その彼に対して、会見の幕屋に入る時に、すなわち神の臨在の前に出る時には、死ぬことがないように、ぶどう酒と濃い酒を飲んではならないと主は言われたのです。なぜ「死ぬ」などと物騒なことが書かれているのでしょうか。なぜなら、彼らが会見の幕屋に入るということは、その時に聖なるものと、俗なるもの、汚れたものときよいものをしっかり区別する判断力が必要であり、その感覚が酒によってにぶり、何か過ちを犯してしまうということは命に関わることであったからです。
私達は週のバイブルスタディーでエステル記を学んでいます。そこにはペルシャの王、アハシュエロス王が出てきます。そして、彼のいる所には常に酒宴があります。そのような酒宴の席で彼が考えたこと、言ったことがエステル記には随所に書かれており、そこから色々な問題が出、彼の酒宴の席での意思決定がユダヤ民族の滅亡にまで影響を与えるようになります。
テモテに胃の痛みのためにぶどう酒を飲みなさいと言ったパウロの言葉も注意深く読みますと大切なことに気がつきます「これからは、水ばかりを飲まないで、胃のため、また、たびたびの痛みを和らげるために、少量のぶどう酒を用いなさい」（テモテ第一 ５章２３節）。そうです、パウロはここで「少量の」と言っている。すなわち、その意味はあなたがブドウ酒を飲むのはあなたの胃のためであり、そのために必要なぶんだけを飲みなさいということで、憂さ晴らしにいつも好きなだけ飲みなさいということではありません。
聖餐式におけるブドウ酒はイエス・キリストの流された血潮を意味するものです。すなわち、私達、信仰者にとって、最も大切なことを思い起こすために用いられた飲み物は、用い方を誤りますと私達を全く違う者に変えてしまいます。パウロが言ったようにブドウ酒は体にいいと最近は巷で言われています。しかし、それも用い方如何では私達に有害となります。
これらのことで問題を起こしてしまった者達は自分の理性、自制心を超える酒を飲むことにより、その問題を引き起ました。これらのことを私達はしっかりと心に刻まなければなりません。
それでは私達はこの酒とどう向き合ったらいいのでしょうか。かつてソロモンの父、ダビデが戦いに行っている間に、彼の町が襲われ、彼の家族をはじめ、町の若者が捕虜になり敵に連れ去れてしまうという事件が起きました。その時にこの町の人々はその責任をダビデに負わせ、彼は殺されそうになります。自分の家族を奪われ、人々からは孤立してしまう状況の中で、ダビデは何によって自らを元気づけたのでしょうか。
サムエル記上３０章６節にはその時のことをこう書いています。「その時、ダビデはひじょうに悩んだ。それは民がみなおのおのそのむすこ娘のために心を痛めたため、ダビデを石で撃とうと言ったからである。しかしダビデはその神、主によって自分を力づけた」。ダビデは「主によって力づけた」。ソロモンはそのダビデの息子でした。しかし、彼はそのダビデのよきものを引き継がずに彼は酒をもって自分を力づけようとしたのです。
アルコールはいつまでも私達の体の緊張を取り去ってくれるものではなく、数時間たてば、飲む前と同じ現実が私達の前にあるということ、ソロモンは飲み干した杯の数だけ、そのことを何度も体験し、悟ったに違いありません。それでは私達はどうしたらいいのか。
私達は自らを元気づけるということに対して酒に頼るのではなく、私達はまず、主によって力をうけようではありませんか。エペソ５章１８節、１９節が言っております「酒に酔ってはいけない。それは乱行のものである。むしろ御霊に満たされて、詩とさんびと霊の歌とをもって語り合い、主に向かって心から賛美の歌を歌いなさい」（エペソ５章１８節、１９節）。
そして、パウロが書いたこの御言葉が究極的な私達の飲酒に対する判断の基準になるでしょう。「こういうわけで、あなたがたは、食べるにも、飲むにも、何をするにも、ただ神の栄光を現すためにしなさい」（コリント第一の手紙１０章３１節）。
もう一つ、ソロモンが試みたことを見てまいりましょう。そう、彼は大きな事業をしたと書いています。そう、彼は稀に見る優秀なビジネスマンでした。彼はビジネスを大きくするところに自らの生きがいを見つけようとしたのです。
4わたしは大きな事業をした。わたしは自分のために家を建て、ぶどう畑を設け、5園と庭をつくり、またすべて実のなる木をそこに植え、6池をつくって、木のおい茂る林に、そこから水を注がせた。7わたしは男女の奴隷を買った。またわたしの家で生れた奴隷を持っていた。わたしはまた、わたしより先にエルサレムにいただれよりも多くの牛や羊の財産を持っていた。8わたしはまた銀と金を集め、王たちと国々の財宝を集めた（伝道の書２章４節－８節）。
ソロモンの大きな事業とは何でしょうか。まず考えられるのは貿易です。海外貿易です。現在、海外貿易は当たり前となりましたが、今から３０００年前に海外と貿易をするということはとてつもなくスケールの大きなことでした。神様がソロモンに与えられた才覚にはそのような海外との商業取引というものもあったのでしょう。
そして、そこから得た莫大な利益によって彼は家を建てました。ブドウ畑を作りました。お金持ちの人が地下にワイン貯蔵庫を作るなんていうことを私達は聞きますが、ソロモンは自分が飲む酒のためにブドウ酒を造りました。敷地内には庭をつくり、池をつくり、林を造りました。私達が知らなければならないのは、彼が住んでいた場所は雨が少ない地域であり、そこに木を植え、それが育ち実を結ぶためには、当然、水が大量に必要であり、そのための灌漑施設が出来、その側には人口の池までも造ったということです。そして、おびただしい数の男女の奴隷を所有し、その中には自分の家で生まれた者達もいたというのです。彼はエルサレム史上、最も多くの牛や羊の財産を持っており、各国の王達から財宝を集めたのです。
神様は私達一人一人に賜物（ギフト）を与えていてくださいます。ですから会社を経営する賜物が与えられている人は、その賜物を用いてそのビジネスに力を注ぐべきでしょう。そして、その時にその事業が祝福され、売り上げが伸び、会社が大きくなっていく時、その時に私達がしかと心の中にとどめておかなければならないことは、そのビジネスの成長は誰のためであるかということです。
なぜなら、私達がこの箇所を注意深く読む時に一つのことに気がつかされるからです。それはこの４節から７節において彼は６度も「わたし」と言っており、４節においては「わたしは自分のために家を建て」と言い、７節では「わたしより先にエルサレムにいた誰よりも、多くの牛や羊の財産を持っていた」ということです。これらの彼の言葉から分かることは、彼の事業は自分のためであったということです。
１９８０年代、元フォード社社長、クライスラー社社長兼最高経営責任者のアイアコッカは時代の寵児でした。世界中に彼の信奉者がおり、その著書や自叙伝が飛ぶように売れたといいます。その自叙伝の中に彼はこう記しています。 「私は人生の夕暮れ時を迎えているが、今だに人生とは何かを模索している。名声や富を手に入れても、それらは鳥の餌ほどの意味しかない」。もし、自分のための名声や富であるなら、私達にとってそれらは鳥の餌のように空しいものです。しかし、わたしたちの働きを主の栄光のためになされていくのなら、それはどんなに小さな働きであっても、大きなやりがいのあるものとなるのです。
最後にソロモンの父、ダビデが陥ったことでありますが、その息子、ソロモンも陥ったことについてお話しします。そう、それは異性の問題です。
またわたしは歌うたう男、歌うたう女を得た。また人の子の楽しみとするそばめを多く得た。9こうして、わたしは大いなる者となり、わたしより先にエルサレムにいたすべての者よりも、大いなる者となった。 わたしの知恵もまた、わたしを離れなかった。10なんでもわたしの目の好むものは遠慮せず、わたしの心の喜ぶものは拒まなかった。わたしの心がわたしのすべての労苦によって、快楽を得たからである。そしてこれはわたしのすべての労苦によって得た報いであった。
ソロモンには１０００人にもおよぶ妻と妾がいました。ソロモンとこの女性達の間に生じた問題が後々、イスラエルという国を亡国へと導いていくことになります。思えば、彼の父ダビデも同じ問題に陥りました。そもそもソロモンは父ダビデの不倫相手、自分の部下の妻、バテシバとの間に生まれた子です。彼がしたこのことは後の彼の人生にぬぐうことができない暗い影を落とすことになります。
聖書の中にはサムソンという男が出てきます。何百人もの男と対峙して戦っても勝ちを得るような怪力を与えられた彼を止めうるものはいませんでした。しかし、彼は自分の愛人、デリラ（その名の意味はヘブル語で「弱くする」）には借りてきた猫のように弱かったのです。その女が自分をだまそうとしているということが分かっておりながら、彼はその女との関係を解消することができずに、最後に彼はその女ゆえに目がえぐりとられてしまうのです。いつの時代でも男は同じことを繰り返します。
ソロモンは比類なき賢者でありました。当初ソロモンは父ダビデの言葉に従い主をおそれ歩みますが、富や名声が高まり、彼の王としての立場が確立するにつれて、霊的には徐々に衰退していきます。その一つの大きな要因は彼が抱えこんだ１０００人にもおよぶ妻や妾でありました（列王記上１０章）。これらの女性達はイスラエルのみならず、色々な国々から連れてこられてきた異教の女でした。
この異教の女達との関係について列王記上１１章１節から６節にはこう書かれています1ソロモン王は多くの外国の女を愛した。すなわちパロの娘、モアブびと、アンモンびと、エドムびと、シドンびと、ヘテびとの女を愛した。2主はかつてこれらの国民について、イスラエルの人々に言われた、「あなたがたは彼らと交わってはならない。彼らもまたあなたがたと交わってはならない。彼らは必ずあなたがたの心を転じて彼らの神々に従わせるからである」。しかしソロモンは彼らを愛して離れなかった。3彼には王妃としての妻七百人、そばめ三百人があった。その妻たちが彼の心を転じたのである。4ソロモンが年老いた時、その妻たちが彼の心を転じて他の神々に従わせたので、 彼の心は父ダビデの心のようには、その神、主に真実でなかった。5これはソロモンがシドンびとの女神アシタロテに従い、アンモンびとの神である憎むべき者ミルコムに従ったからである。 6このようにソロモンは主の目の前に悪を行い、父ダビデのように全くは主に従わなかった。
ソロモンは彼女たちがそれぞれの神々を礼拝することを黙認したのです。そのことによりＢＣ９３１年彼の死によって王国は分裂し、ソロモンの子レハブアムは南ユダ王国を、ヤロブアムは北イスラエル王国を受け継ぐことになるのです。その後のそれぞれの王国は霊的にアップダウンを繰り返しつつ、しかし完全に主に立ち返ることのないまま、それぞれバビロンとアッシリアに滅ぼされる運命に陥るのです。
自ら書いた箴言３１章３節の言葉はソロモンにとって、まさしく苦い経験を込めた戒めの言葉だったのでしょう。あなたの力を女についやすな、王をも滅ぼすものに、あなたの道を任せるな。（箴言３１章３節）
ガラテヤ５章１６節、１７節は言います。「御霊によって歩みなさい。そうすれば、決して肉の欲望を満足させるようなことはありません。 なぜなら、肉の願うことは御霊に逆らい、御霊は肉に逆らうからです。この二つは互いに対立していて、そのためあなたがたは、自分のしたいと思うことをすることができないのです（ガラテヤ５章１６節、１７節）。
異性との問題というのは、時に理性や知性を超えてしまう肉欲です。このガリラヤ書は私達の内にはこの肉なる欲と霊なる思いがあるというのです。そして、これらは互いに対立しており、時に自分がすべきことを知っていながら、それをすることができないほどに、その対立は激しいというのです。ですから、自らの力に頼ることなく、御霊と共に歩みなさいというのです。周りを注意して、しっかりと自らを強めて歩みなさいとはここに書かれていません。そうではなく御霊によって歩むようにというのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、今日お話ししました酒、事業、異性に関しての結論です。これらのことは伝道の書の２章にこの順番で書かれています。ソロモンはその三つのことを続けざまに書き記し、その一番最後にこの三つに対して、このような結論を書いています。
すなわち、11そこで、わたしはわが手のなしたすべての事、およびそれをなすに要した労苦を顧みたとき、見よ、皆、空であって、風を捕えるようなものであった。日の下には益となるものはないのである（伝道の書２章１１節）。

今日、私達の多くもこの山頂を目指しています。まだ到達していないところですから夢を希望があります。しかし、私達は悟らなければなりません。そこに既に立った者の声を聴かねばなりません。そこから私達が悟りをえるのなら、私達はルートを変えることができるからです。ある者は新しい道を歩み始めることができるのです。
ブドウという食物は神が与えたもの。それを加工してブドウ酒としたことも神が人に与えた知恵でありましょう。それは人の喜びとなり、時に人の体に健 康をもたらします。不正をせず、神から与えられている天職に力を注ぐことは神の御心にかなったことです。その労働に対する対価にも神の祝福が注がれることでしょう。神の前に一人の男と一人の女が結ばれるということ、これは神の御心にかなったことです。これらは主の前に正しく用いれば大きな祝福となり、喜びとなります。そう、それらは神の祝福です。しかし、用い方を間違えますとそれは大きな問題となります。ソロモンはこれらのことを自分のために徹底的にしました。そして、その試みの後に彼の心に残ったものはつかみどころのない空しさだったのです。
今朝、私達はここから知恵を得ましょう。神の祝福を正しく用いることができますように。主は祝福としてこれらのものを私達に与えてくださっているのです。そして、私達が御霊に満たされ、御霊と共に歩み、この一度の人生を最も価値あるもののために生きることができますように。お祈りしましょう。
“Solomon:The scene from the top of the mountain”
There is a Professional Baseball coach in Japan named Sou Taguchi. He is the coach of the Orix Buffalo’s. He used to play in the major league, and had two champion rings from his career. His wife is a Christian and he also became a Christian while in the US. There is a chaplain in every American professional sports team. He talked about the experience of a Bible study he had with his team.
One day, he went back to his house after a Bible Study, and his wife asked him “What did you learn today?” He said they were talking about raw salmon. Late he found that he mistook King Solomon for King Salmon and law for raw. This is a true story.
There is a Japanese TV program called “Solomon Style”, and there is a movie that has the theme of “The treasure of Solomon”. King Solomon is known even in Japan. He is famous for his wisdom and wealth, which were given to him by God in the bible.
Solomon was a child of David and Bathsheba, and he became the king of Israel after David. God gave him amazing wisdom and large wealth that nobody ever had, and he experimented with these things.
First he tried to find the meaning of life, pursued satisfaction and explored the limits to pleasure. He used his fortune, wisdom and fame to find these things. Solomon’s wealth is not comparable to an average person going out to eat because of a leftover budget. Instead, he had inexhaustible wealth, which he could limitlessly use to attain anything for his own pleasure. In the beginning of Solomon’s pursuit of satisfaction, he began drinking alcohol.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. 2 “Laughter,” I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?” 3 I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives (Ecclesiastes 2:1-11).
I can imagine that Solomon’s daily life was quite busy. He had negotiations and incidents he dealt with in order to rule Israel. Amidst the busyness, Solomon seeks alcohol to find comfort and relaxation.
The Bible does not prohibit drinking alcohol. Alcohol at that time refers to wine, and we know Jesus’ first miracle was at the wedding party in Cana. He changed the water to wine at the wedding. Jesus did not allow the wine to disappear from the party. Sometime people think that a Christian has to become abstemious and give up joy and pleasure, but to be a Christian is to find joy and pleasure that we have never even imagined before.
Jesus shared wine at his last supper with his disciples. The Apostle Paul recommended Timothy to drink wine for his health. These are positive things about alcohol but the Bible also mentions about the troubles caused by drinking.
Do you know where the Bible first mentions alcohol? It is in Genesis 9, where Noah gets drunk and sleeps naked, and his son mocks and disrespects him. When Noah wakes up and is sober again, he curses his son. We know the Bible writes about Noah like this, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God” (Genesis 6:9). But the wine changed influenced in him a disgraceful behavior and that affected his faith to God.
Also, Leviticus warned us by saying like this;
8 Then the LORD said to Aaron, 9 “You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11 and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the LORD have given them through Moses.” (Leviticus 10:8-11)
Aaron is a priest who does God’s works. To Aaron, God says to not drink whenever he goes into the tent of meeting, for if he does, he will die. God says this because to enter the tent means to stand before the presence of God, and Aaron must be able to distinguish between holy and wrong things. If he was drunk, his ability will diminish and he may lose his life for his mistake.
We are learning from the book of Esther at our weekday Bible study. The king of Persia, Ahasuerus is in that book. He always had parties and drank. The book mentions much of what he said and thought as he was drinking. From this stemmed many problems, and almost even leads to the extinction of the Jews.
We also find an important part in Paul’s words to Timothy. “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.” (1 Timothy 5:23). Paul said “A Little Wine” here. Namely, the reason to drink is just for Timothy’s health, and not for his frustration.
The red wine represents the blood of Jesus Christ. The wine reminds us about the most important truth about Christ but the same wine also leads us into trouble. As Paul mentioned, we are told that wine is good for our health, but it also causes trouble if we do not drink with consideration.
All of these people in the Bible lost their ability to control and reason with the power of alcohol, and brought problems upon themselves. We must keep these things in our mind.
So then, how do we face alcohol? There was an incident where enemies invaded and took family and people while King David was out of town. At that time the people held David responsible and tried to kill him. In such a difficult situation, how did he strengthen himself?
First Samuel 30: 6 mentioned the story like this; 6 David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God. Solomon was the son of David, but he did not inherit his father’s faith in the Lord and he tried to strength himself through wine.
Alcohol relieves our stress for a while but when we become sober, the stressful situation is still in front of us. Solomon must have experienced this time and time again after every cup he drank. What then, are we to do?
Let us not rely on alcohol, but let us receive cheer and strength from the Lord. Ephesians 5:18 and 19 encourages us. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,
The words of Paul will be the best standard for us to make a judgment on drinking. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Another place Solomon seeked pleasure was in business. He was an excellent entrepreneur and found purpose in his life through his business.
4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well—the delights of a man’s heart.
What was Solomon’s business? Solomon’s biggest business was trading with foreign countries. Trading overseas is common in these days but at that age, the trade he had done was extraordinary. God gave Solomon the talent of business.
And from his big profit, he built his own house. He made a vineyard. Wealthy people now may keep their wine in their own personal wine cellar, but Solomon made his own wine. He made a yard with an irrigation system and made the pond and planted the trees. He owned more slaves, cows, sheep and treasures than anyone in Jerusalem before him.
God gives us gifts. Therefore, all those who are given a talent, should do their best for their companies and business’s and when the business is blessed and grows, we also have to keep in mind what and who the business is for?
Because when we read the verses from 4 to 7, we find Solomon mentions “I” six times, and in verse 4 he said “I built houses for myself”, and verse 7 said “I owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me”. According to his words, his business was for himself.
In the 1980’s, the President and CEO of Chrysler, Lee Iacocca was very popular. His autobiography sold very well but he mentioned in the book, “I am now spending the late days in my life, and I am still searching for the meaning of life. Even though, I gain fame and wealth, these are just like seeds of birds”. If the fame and wealth are just only for yourself, surely that is like seed of birds, but if we work for His glory; it will be worthwhile for us.
The third thing Solomon chased was also a struggle by David, and that is the relationship between man and woman.
I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well—the delights of a man’s heart. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil.11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
Solomon had thousands of wives and mistress. Solomon’s relationships with these women eventually lead Israel into ruin. As we think about his father, David, he also had the trouble with the desires of the flesh. In the first place, Solomon was born between David and his subordinate’s wife, Bathsheba.The adultery casted a shadow on his life and the nation of Israel.
There is also a man named Samson in the Bible. God gave him superhuman power. Nobody could stop him, but he was weak to his mistress, Delilah. He knew of Delilah’s deceptions, but he could rid his relationship with her and as a result he lost both of his eyes. Man always repeat the same things in any age.
Solomon was an incomparably wise man. In his beginning, he obeyed God like his father David, but as he grew in his fame and wealth, his spirituality declined. One of the biggest reasons was the thousands of women he was engaged to. Many of these women were taken from foreign countries and they were pagan.
First King 11; 1-6 mentions about the relationship of Solomon and these women. 1 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.”
Nonetheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4 as Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 5 He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not follow the LORD completely, as David his father had done.
Solomon accepted and allowed these women to worship their gods, and that caused Israel to split into two countries, one is Kingdom of Judah governed by Solomon’s son, Rehoboam and Kingdom of Israel reigned by also Solomon’s son Jeroboam, and both Kingdoms are finally destroyed by Babylon and Assyria.
Solomon wrote the Proverbs and the words reveal the lesson from his bitter experience. Do not spend your strength on women, your vigor on those who ruin kings (Proverbs 31:3).
Galatians 5:16,17 said 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
The issue of man and woman is our own desire and it is so powerful than it overcomes our own reason and intelligence. The book of Galatians said have the desires of flesh and Spirit, and these are against each other, the conflict is so strong and sometime we cannot do what we want to do. Therefore, we do not rely on ourselves and walk with Spirit. It was not saying to be careful your surroundings and walk strongly as possible as you can but walk with Holy Spirit.
Therefore 11 yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
Solomon pursed pleasure, wealth, and women. He was a man who stood at the very top of these three things. He thought he will be satisfied by standing at the top, but what he saw from that place is not what he expected. What did he see there? First of all, he looked back at his past. He said “I surveyed all that hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve”. He knew no one ever pursed pleasure, wealth and woman like him before, and he looked around at the top of what he accomplished. He found “Everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind”. He just experienced emptiness at the top of the mountain.
Many of us also try to reach the mountain peak. This is our dream and hope because we have not reached it yet, but we have to know. We have to listen to the words of the person who already reached and stood at the mountain top. If we get insight from that we can still change our life plan. It is not too late. We can start walking a new route in our life.
Grapes were given to us by God, and the wisdom to make wine was also given to us by God. Wine brings joy and good health. It is God willing for us to work hard with an honest heart. We will be blessed by what we have done. It is also God’s will for the man and woman to become one body like Genesis said. These will become our blessing and joy if we use it in a proper way before God. These are God’s blessing, but if we do not use it in a proper way, these will become troubles to us. Solomon experimented all he could and found everything to be empty.
This morning, let us find wisdom through what Solomon learned. May we use God’s blessing as he wishes. God gives these for His blessing to us. Let us be filled with the Holy Spirit and walk with that Holy Spirit, and may we live for the most valuable things in our life. Let us pray.
