ユダヤ人は私達には想像ができないほどに系図を大切にする人達です。祖先がどんなに偉大であったかということを誇りとし、日々を生きる希望としている民です。そのような中でイエス・キリストはごまかしてでも隠しておきたい名前が連なる系図の中に自らの出生を置くことをよしとされました。そう、イエス・キリストは遊女であった者、異教徒であった者、姦淫の結果、生まれた者の家系に連なる者としてお生まれになったのです。このことは何を意味しているのでしょうか・・・。

イエス様と私達の間に壁はない

ご存知のようにイエス・キリストはイスラエルのベツレヘムでお生まれになりました。今月、もし私達がイスラエルに行きまして、クリスマスをお祝いするためにこのベツレヘムに行こうとしますのなら、私達は兵士が立つ検問所を通り、必要ならパスポートの提示をしなければなりません。なぜなら、そこはイスラエルという国の中にあるパレスチナ自治区だからです。最近の情勢により、このベツレヘムでも投石がなされているとニュースは伝えていますゆえに、もしかしたら現在、このベツレヘムに入ることができないかもしれません。すなわちそれは今年のクリスマス、私達はベツレヘムでクリスマスをお祝いすることができないことを意味します。

このベツレヘムという町は聖書のルツ記にでてきます。時は紀元前１１００年、外国で二人の息子を失ったナオミというベツレヘムを故郷（ふるさと）とするユダヤ人の女性が、亡き息子の嫁、ユダヤ人にとりまして宿敵である異教の民、モアブ人であるルツを連れて自分の故郷、ベツレヘムに戻ってくるという話です。

かつてナオミは夫と息子たちと共にその地で起きた飢饉のために、ベツレヘムを出て外国にいきますが、帰郷してきた時には愛する家族を全て失い、言葉も文化も違う外国で息子に嫁いだ嫁だけを連れて彼女は帰ってきたのです。「故郷に錦を！」などとは程遠い話で、その時にナオミは彼女を昔から知る故郷の者達に向かい、私を「苦しみ」と呼んでくれといいます。

しかし、神のまなざしは当時の社会では最も弱い立場にありました、この姑と嫁の上に注がれます。ルツははからずもナオミの親戚でありますボアズという男性にベツレヘムで出会い、彼らは結ばれ、ルツは男の子を生みます。普通ならこの物語は失意のどん底で故郷に帰った者達に神はさいわいを与えたということで終わります。しかし、神はこの一つの点を次の点に結びつけていかれたのです。

どうか心に留めておいてください。このナオミと結ばれたボアズの母は聖書に記録されているラハブでありまして、彼女は異教徒でありイスラエルの敵でありましたカナン人であり、また遊女でありました。またお話ししましたようにルツはユダヤ人が最も忌み嫌うモアブ人だったのです。このボアズとルツから生まれた子がオベデで、そのオベデの子がエッサイで、そのエッサイから生まれた八人の子のうち、その末っ子にダビデという男がいます。そう、かつてボアズとルツがベツレヘムに暮らしたように、その後もこの家族はベツレヘムにとどまり続けたのでしょう。ダビデもベツレヘムを出身とし、そこで幼い時から羊を飼う者として育ちます。

ある時、預言者サムエルが神の指示によりエッサイの息子たちの中から初代の王でありましたサウルに継ぐ王を見出そうとし、七人の息子たちがサムエルの前に立ちます。しかし、その中に神の御心にかなった者は一人もいませんでした。サムエルはエッサイに「他に息子はいないのか」と尋ねましたところ、彼の末っ子のダビデはその場におらず野で羊の番をしていたのです。そうです、彼は数にも入らない者でした。しかし、神の御目はこのダビデに注がれており、彼は二代目のイスラエルの王となるべくサムエルから油を注がれるのです。

このダビデは神の前に誠実に生きた偉大な王でありましたが、部下の妻、バテシバと姦淫の罪を犯し、その二人から生まれたソロモンがダビデの後継者となりイスラエルの王となります。そして、その子孫としてイエス・キリストは彼らの約１０００年あとに、やはりルツとダビデも住んだベツレヘムで生まれたのです。言うなれば遊女であった者、異教徒であった者、姦淫の結果、生まれた者の家系に連なる者としてイエス・キリストはお生まれになったのです。

ユダヤ人は私達には想像ができないほどに系図を大切にする人達です。言うまでもなく、その祖先がどんなに偉大であったかというところに彼らの誇りと今を生きる励みとしている民です。そのような中でイエス・キリストはある意味、系図をごまかしてでも隠しておきたい名前の中に身を置くことをよしとしたのです。いいえ、聖書はあえてスポットライトをこのような人間にあてて、イエスはこのような者達の系図の中に生まれたのだと宣言しているのです。

当時のベツレヘムはとても小さな寒村でした。それこそ１００世帯にも満たない村だったそうです。そのような寒村の中に身を横たえる宿を見つけることができなかった年若く、何の肩書きもないヨセフと身重のマリヤにあてがわれたのは馬小屋でした。この馬小屋というものを私達はカードや置物で見ることがありますが、実際にはこの馬小屋は自然の洞穴のような場所であったと言われています。そして、この洞穴は住む場所をもたない羊飼い達が野宿するためによく使っていた場所だったようで、現在もベツレヘムに行くと当時の洞穴が残されているのです。イエス・キリストはダビデの約１０００年後にそんな洞窟の一つの中でお生まれになったに違いありません。

先にお話しましたように今日のパレスチナ自治区であるベツレヘムに入っていこうというユダヤ人はおりません。ユダヤ人が運転する観光バスすらベツレヘムには入れないのです。あまりにも危険だからです。ユダヤ人としてお生まれになり、我らの王となりましたお方の生誕の地に当のユダヤ人が近づくことができないという皮肉な現状に私達はあるのです。そうです、イエス・キリストは遊女、異教徒、姦淫の結果、生まれた者の家系に連なる者として生まれたにもかかわらず、そこには高い壁があるのです。

そして、それはユダヤ人だけではありません。今日の私達は当時の人達よりも多くの知識を得ています。当時のワイズマンはイエス様を見出すことができましたが、今日のワイズマンはベツレヘムで起きたことを知り得ないのです。忙しく毎日を過ごし、色々なことに目移りしながら生きている、多くの問題を抱えている私達にこそイエス・キリストは必要でありますのに、イエス・キリストが諸々の祖先のもとに飼い葉おけで生まれたということは、すなわちイエス様と私達の間には壁がないことを意味していますのに、私達の心の壁が高すぎて私達は彼を見ることができないのです。

長い間、この世界は冷戦の時代を送りました。そう、それはイデオロギーの違いからくる問題でした。しかし、あの９１１以降、私達が抱え続けている問題は民族と宗教の違いからくる問題です。よく言われます。キリスト教徒が民族問題を作り出しているのではないかと。確かにそれは正しいのかもしれません。しかし、覚えてください、今日、お話ししましたように、キリスト教徒が信じているキリストは民族の違いを超えたお方であったことを。彼はイスラエルにとりまして宿敵である異教徒の系図の中に身を置くことをよしとされたのですから。ということは、どこに問題があるのか。そうです、それはキリスト教徒と名乗る私達、人間の側にある問題なのです。私達はこのことを謙虚に受け止め、悔い改めなければなりません。

この一年、皆さんはどんな日々を過ごしましたか。あなたはイエス様の飼葉桶 が見えていますか。欲するものが全て与えられておりながら、心の中にむなしい渇きがありませんか。この人のディレクションに従えばいいのだという存在がいますか。あなたとあなたの家族にはここに立つというファンデーションがありますか。新しい一年も自分のこれまでの知恵や経験にだけ寄り頼んでいきますか。どうか覚えてください、私達の経験や知識というものはたかだか数十年の蓄積にすぎないのです。

今日、私達はこれらの全てを変えることができるのです。きっと人には言えないことを抱えている方もいるかもしれません。私のこの気持ちに何かを語りかけることができる人などいないと思われる方がいるかもしれません。しかし、どうか覚えてください、人類においてイエス・キリストだけが誰を先祖として生まれるかということを決めることができたお方であったということを。彼はその特権が与えられていながらも、愛する伴侶や息子を亡くした未亡人、異邦人、異教徒、遊女、殺人者の末に生まれ、飼葉桶に寝かされた主、私達のために十字架にかかられた主イエス・キリストはあなたの心の思いを知り、あなたにこれからどうあるべきかを示してくださることでしょう。彼こそが私達の土台となるお方です。彼にはあなたの心に届く言葉があるのです。

このようなお方が誕生された日ですから、私達はシーズンズ・グリーティングなどとは言えません。それは季節のあいさつではなく、私達の新しい人生の始まりとなりうる日だからです。ですから、私達は天と地に向かって、声高らかにメリークリスマス！と叫ぶのです。お祈りしましょう。

There is no wall between us and Jesus.

As you know Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem at Israel. If we go to Israel this month and visit Bethlehem for Christmas, we need to go through an inspection and there are solders standing there. Sometimes we have to show our passport, because Bethlehem is a Palestinian Territory. But because of recent diplomatic situation, people throw stones and having conflict at there, so we might not enter Bethlehem this year which means we cannot celebrate Christmas at Bethlehem.

The name of Bethlehem appears in the book of Ruth in the Old Testament. The time is around 1100 years before Christ, the widow, Naomi who lost her husband and two sons in the foreign country, Moab, has come back to her hometown, Bethlehem with her daughter in law, also the widow, Ruth who is a Moabite. People of Moab is the old enemy for Jews since the time of Moses.

Naomi left her hometown, Bethlehem with her husband and two sons because of the famine, but she lost her family and came back with only her daughter in law who has a totally different culture and language. We say in Japanese KOKYOU NI NISHIKI WO which means “To come home in triumph”, but it was not her case at all. Naomi told her old friends, please call me “Bitter”.

But God’s gracious eyes and attention were upon these widows who were in the lowest position of society. Later, Ruth met the relative of Naomi, Boaz, and had married Boaz. They became wife and husband and they had a boy. Usually this is a good end of a story, but God had more plans. Now the dot became the line.

Dear brothers and sisters, please keep in your mind. The mother of Boaz was Rahab and she is a pagan and enemy of Israel, Canaanite and she was a prostitute, and as I said Ruth came from the old enemy of Jews. The son who was born from Boaz and Ruth was Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of eight sons and the youngest one was David. The generations of the family must had stayed in Bethlehem, because David was raised in Bethlehem as a shepherd.

One day, God sent the Prophet Samuel to the family of Jesse to find the king of Israel.  Seven of Jesse’s sons stand before Samuel, but there are none to satisfy God’s will. Samuel asked Jesse, “Do you have any other son?” Yes, the youngest son, David who was not there, was taking care of the sheep in the field during their interview. Brothers and sisters, David was not counted! but God’s eyes were upon him and he became the second king of Israel.

King David was faithful to God, but he committed adultery with his subordinate’s wife, Bathsheba and she had a child, Solomon who became the king of Israel after David, and as a descendant of Solomon, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Jesus was born a thousand years after Solomon. Yes, Jesus was in the family tree of prostitute, pagan, and adultery.

Jews value genealogy incredibly. Usually they put their pride and hope in their genealogy. Our Lord, Jesus accepted to be a part of these people, we would like to conceal or remove such ancestors from our genealogy, but the Bible actually highlight these people, and declared Jesus was born in this genealogy!

The town of Bethlehem was a small village at that time. It was less than a hundred households. Mary and Joseph could not find a place to stay, and they finally found a stable. We see the stable in postcards and ornaments, but according to scholars, the stable was like a natural cave, and the cave was used by shepherds who did not have the place to live. You can still see these caves in Bethlehem. Jesus must have born in one of these caves after a thousand years later of David.

As I mentioned in the beginning, there are no Jews who come to Palestine Territory, Bethlehem today. Even Jewish tourist bus driver would not drive into the town. It is too dangerous. How ironic that they cannot come visit the birth place of their Savor. Yes, Jesus was born in the family tree of prostitute, pagan, and adultery, but there is a tall wall between them.

And that is not only Jews. We have much more knowledge than the people in that age. The Wise men could find Jesus at his age but today’s Wiseman does not know what happened in Bethlehem. We, the people who are always busy with so many other things, and facing so many problems really need Jesus Christ. Jesus was born in the manger, that means he did not have wall between us, but the wall of our heart is too tall, and we cannot see him.

For many years, we spent Cold War age, yes, that is coming from the difference of our ideology, but since 911, our problem come from our difference of race and religion. I heard sometime, Is Christian create that conflict? Honestly speaking, it might be right. But please remember, as we have been told today, Jesus Christ who is we, Christian is believing accepted to be a part of genealogy who has pagan and enemy. And then, where is the problem? Yes, that is the problem of man and woman who called themselves “Christian”. Yes, that is the problem of human. We should accept that truth humbly and repent it.

How was your past year? Can you see the manger? Do you feel emptiness even though you had everything you want to have? Do you have someone who gives you the direction of your life? Do you and your family has a foundation which you have confidence to keep stand? Are you going to rely on only your experience and knowledge? Please remember our experience is only a couple of decades and our knowledge does not give us the all answers.

We can change these today! You might have something you cannot share to anyone. You might think that nobody will understand and accept what you are feeling and thinking. But please remember, Only Jesus can choose his genealogy among all people on the earth. He was given such a privilege, but he accepted to be born under the name of the disparate widow, prostitute, pagan and murderer laid down on the manger and died for us on the cross. He knows and understands what you are thinking and directs the rest of your life. He will be your foundation. He has the words which really direct our life.

Christmas is the day of his birth, so we cannot say “Season’s Greeting” It is not the greeting of a season but it is the beginning of your new life, so we proclaim to the heaven and earth, we all say, “Merry, Merry Christmas!” Let us pray.
