「恋は盲目」とはよくいったもので、それが人を好きになるということです。もっというとその様は「おバカ」に見えるのです。「愚か」に見えるのです。そして、これは恋心だけではありません。顕著なこととして、日本語にもありますでしょう、「親ばか」という言葉が。まだ理性のあたりをうろうろしているのは、相手に対する本気度が足りないのです。本当の愛は行き着くところにいくと愚かになるのです。はたから見ていると明らかにまさしく、その様は見ちゃいられないのです。でも当人は本気も本気、命がけなのです。
時に愛は私達の思いを超えたとんでもないことをするということ、すなわち愛は人を一見、愚かに見える者にする、私達の想像をこえたとんでもないことをさせるのが愛だということを私達が知っているのなら、天地万物を創造された神が私達を本当に愛する故に、私達の意表をつくようなこと、そう、それはあまりにも突拍子のないことで、信じがたきことで、よくよく考えたら愚かにも思えること、そう、すなわち言葉が肉体をとられ、一人の処女の胎に宿ったということ、このとんでもない、理解しがたいことも納得し、信じることができませんか。

感じる神
最近、著名な宗教学者の対談を興味深く読みました。それは日本人の心と宗教心について語っているもので、私達日本人の宗教心とは「神々の気配を感じるか否か」という「気配の宗教心」だというのです。たとえば私達が山に奥深く入れば、そこに何かの気配を感じて、その先に先祖を感じたり、神々や仏を感じるということで、何か悪いことが起きますと、その気配からそれは神々のたたりだ、死んだ人のたたりだということになるというのです。
夏になるとプライムタイムのテレビ番組で芸能人が夜、廃墟となった病院や学校を訪ね廊下の先の暗闇を前に「あぁ～感じますね～、いや～、もうちょっとこれ以上、先には進めません」と言うようなもので、私達はこのような番組が大好きなのです。
そもそもなぜ私達は何かしら人を超えた存在の気配を感じるのでしょうか。なぜ初日の出を前に何万もの人達は手を合わせるのでしょうか。このようなことは日本人に限ったことではなく、そのように教えられているわけでもないのに、このような心はいかなる民族にも共通するものです。世界、どこに行っても人は石や木々、彫像といった拝む対象をもっています。
創世記には神が天地を創造され、諸々の生き物を作られたということが書かれていますが、その創造の最後に最初の人、アダムを作った時のことがこう記されています『主なる神は土のちりで人を造り、命の息をその鼻に吹きいれられた。そこで人は生きた者となった』（創世記２章７節）。
創世記によりますと、この「命の息を吹き込む」ということは他の動植物の創造にはなされませんでしたが、神様は最初の人であるアダムの鼻に命を息を吹き入れ、それにより人は生きた者となった記しています。よく自分の学部の教授の薫陶に預かっている人に対して、あの人は「○○先生の息のかかった人だ」と言います。その意味するところは、それゆえに○○先生の考え方、生き方を継承しているということを意味します。
創世記の記事は象徴的な表現でしょうが、神の息がかかった人間にはやはり神の刻印が押されているのです。私達の身体、どこをみてもMBG、すなわちMade by Godというシンボルを見つけることはできませんが、その刻印が確かに私達の心には刻まれています。しかしながら私達はそれを意識せずに生きていますゆえに普段は何も考えませんが、いざ人の力を超えるような、また珍しい自然界の事象を目の当たりにしますと（それは時に群を抜いて巨大な木であったり、白い蛇であったりします）、これだけ合理的で科学の進歩が目まぐるしい現代社会にあっても私達はそれらを祭り、手を合わせるのです。
感じることは大切です。感受性が豊かであることは大切です。人との出会い、それが将来の伴侶となると、ビビッときましたなんてこともあり、そのような直観も大切にすべきことなのかもしれません。しかし、大切な将来の伴侶を「ビビッ」だけで決める人はあまりいませんでしょう。会ったその日に「あなたにビビッときました。共に人生を歩んでください」とプロポーズをする人はあまりいませんし、そのようなプロポーズをされても「ふざけないでちょうだい」とそれを受ける人もあまりいませんでしょう。なぜ、そのようなプロポーズは受け入れられないのですか。たとえ「ビビッ」ときても、その人のことを何も知らないからです。
また婚婚生活を始めるにあたり、僕は何も言わないから「僕の気配を感じてくれ」とか「私の空気を察して生きて」というカップルはいないと思います。「今日は主人の気配を感じています。どうやら忙しいようです」とか「今日は妻の気配がほとんどありません。心配です」というような結婚生活が成り立つことはないのです。二人はお化けじゃないのです。二人の間にコミュニケーションがなければ結婚生活はとても難しいものとなりますでしょう。なぜなら、相手が何を考えているか全く分からないのです。それでは相手を知るために必ず必要なものは何でしょうか。それは「言葉」です。私達は互いの想いや気持ちを伝えるため言葉を用いるのです。
言葉
「お腹すいたな～、さぁ、この気配を感じて食事を準備してくれとか、私は今、落ち込んでいるの、この空気を察して慰めてちょうだい」と心の中で念じても、そのことが相手に伝わることはありません。なぜ、私達の身体には耳と口があるのでしょうか。私達が口で言葉を語り、耳でその言葉を聞くためです。
神様は「人がご自身を気配として感じとることの限界」を最初から知っていたのでしょう。それによってはご自身の想いを十分に人に伝えることはできないということです。ですから神様は天地創造を始めるにあたり、その最初からまず「言葉」によって、この世界に、人間に対峙されたのです。その象徴が聖書の第一ページ、その冒頭に書かれている言葉です『神は「光あれ」と言われた。すると光があった』（創世記１章３節）。
聖書の始めの天地創造、その創造の方法にこれから神が人とどのように関わりをもつかということが書かれているのです。そうです、神はこの天地創造を全てその言葉でなし、その言葉をもって人間と関わりを持たれました。
言うまでもない言葉とは具体的なものです。皆さん、この礼拝が終わった後に八尋ホールでコーヒーをついでいる時に、お隣に並んでいる人が何を感じているか分かりますか。分かりません。「今日はどこにランチに行こうかな」と考えているかもしれませんし「あら、コーヒーがないわ」と思っているかもしれません。このようなことを完全に察することはできないのです。それが察すること、感じることの限界です。でも、その方が「今日、おいしい中華を食べにいかない」とか「コーヒーをすぐに準備しなくちゃ」と言葉に出して言えば、その方が考えていることが分かるのです。
言葉は私達の心にあることを表します。そして、キリスト教とはまさしく聖書に記されている言葉によって私達に具体的に語りかけるものです。今日、全世界に数多くの教会が実在しているのは、キリスト教が「言葉」を中心としているからです。これが「気配」だけであるのなら、それはある国地域限定の土着宗教にはなりえますが、そこから先に発展することはなかったことでしょう。イエスの愛弟子、ヨハネは神がそのような手段をとって、人との関わりをもっていることを理解して、自ら福音書を書き始めるにあたり、冒頭をこのように始めました。
1初めに言があった。言は神と共にあった。言は神であった。2この言は初めに神と共にあった。3すべてのものは、これによってできた。できたもののうち、一つとしてこれによらないものはなかった。4この言に命があった。そしてこの命は人の光であった。5光はやみの中に輝いている。そして、やみはこれに勝たなかった（ヨハネ１章１節‐５節）。
ヨハネが「初めに言葉があった」と言った時、それは先にお話したように天地創造における神の言葉が念頭にあったことでしょう。
ぶ厚い聖書は旧約聖書と新約聖書の二つに区分されています。旧約聖書において神様はその姿を人に見せることはありませんでした。しかし、その代わりに神は王や預言者を通して、その言葉を彼らに託し、彼らはその言葉を預かり、それを民に取り次ぎました。すなわち神は気配によるのではなくて、その言葉をもって具体的にご自身の想いを人に伝えたのです。そしてヨハネが記すように、その言葉には命があり、それは人の光となりうるものでした。その言葉が私達の足を照らす光となるはずだったのです。
当時、その神の言葉の代表的なものは「律法」でした。そうです、律法とは「これをしてはならない」「こうしなければならない」というルールです。私達の間にも今、法律がありますが、それも全て言葉によって記されているものです。
私達の礼拝の対象となる「山々」や「巨木」が私達に「こう生きるべきだ」という指針を示すことはありません。「指針」は「具体的な言葉」によってはじめて明らかになるのです。神様は旧約聖書においてイスラエルの民に彼らが幸いに生きるようにと、この言葉に積極的に従うこと、そして超えてはならないことを言葉をもって示されました。その枠の中にいる限り、あなた方は守られ命を得、またそれはあなた方の光となるだろうというのです。
その代表的なものは「十戒」で、そこには私達が守るべき言葉が十、並べられました。私達はそれを受けて、自分が何をすべきなのか、何をすべきではないのかということを知ります。そして、それを守ろうとします。しかし、その結果、数千年をかけてはっきりと分かったことは私達人間の性（さが）はそれを守ることができないということでした。旧約聖書はその神の言葉に従い得ない人間の歴史が記されていると言っても過言ではありません。パウロというキリストの使徒は私達の心の想いを代表するかのようにして、自らの心中をこう書いています。
15わたしは自分のしていることが、わからない。なぜなら、わたしは自分の欲する事は行わず、かえって自分の憎む事をしているからである。16もし、自分の欲しない事をしているとすれば、わたしは律法が良いものであることを承認していることになる。17そこで、この事をしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である。18わたしの内に、すなわち、わたしの肉の内には、善なるものが宿っていないことを、わたしは知っている。なぜなら、善をしようとする意志は、自分にあるが、それをする力がないからである。19すなわち、わたしの欲している善はしないで、欲していない悪は、これを行っている。20もし、欲しないことをしているとすれば、それをしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である（ローマ人への手紙７章１５節∸２０節）。
神様は繰り返し、繰り返し人に言葉を語り続けました。しかし、人はその言葉を聞くことがなく、己が道を歩みました。そこにはいつも混乱と破滅がともないました。そのような時が何千年も続き、ある時、神様は次なることをなされました。それはベツレヘムという誰も注目することのないような小さな、小さな寒村で起きました。そのことを先に取り上げたヨハネはこう記しています。
14そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。わたしたちはその栄光を見た。それは父のひとり子としての栄光であって、めぐみとまこととに満ちていた（ヨハネ１章９節‐１４節）。
この出来事をルカは具体的に記録しました。その一つとしてベツレヘムの草原に野宿していた羊飼いに語った御使いの言葉をこのように書き記しました。
10「恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。11きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。12あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」。（ルカ２章１０節‐１３節）。
この聖書箇所で皆さんがよく分からないということがありますか。私達はここに記されていることをイメージすることができます。なぜなら、この出来事は天で起きた出来事ではなく、私達が住んでいるこの地球で起きたことだからです。ルカが記しているように、当時、その場に居合わせた者達はその幼子の気配を感じたのではなく、確かに飼葉桶に寝かされた幼子が布にくるまれて寝かされているのを見たのです。
かつて燃える柴の中から、つむじ風の中から、月や星を通してその気配を人に感じさせ、その中から人に語りかけた神は、私達が見ることができる、触れることができる人の子の姿をとられたというのです。
さぁ、この辺りです。「いよいよ、きたぞ、牧師はイエス・キリストが処女マリアから生まれたと話しだすぞ。気配とか言葉ならなんとなく分かる、しかし、神の一人子なるイエス・キリストが乙女から生まれたということ、だから聖書に躓くんだ」、そう思っている方がいるとしますのなら、ごもっともなことです。それでは思いがけない方に登場していただきましょう。
さだまさしという人の歌を時々、聞きます。さださんは言葉を駆使して私達の心に語りかけることができる歌い手です。その彼の歌の中に「恋愛症候群：その発病及び傾向と対策に関する一考察」という長い歌があります。男女の間の恋愛というは一つの病気のようなもので、その発病・傾向・対策を歌っているものです。まさしく、さださんならではの歌です。

人が誰かに恋をすると傍から見れば「何やってんだ」ということになるのです。あばたもえくぼ、目が宙に浮き、ぼっーとしてシャンプーで歯を磨いてしまったり、占いが気になり、茶柱までも気になり、相手の欠点には気づいても気づかずにいられるし、食べ物、着るもの、 見るもの、聴くもの、すべて彼、彼女とは好みが合うと思うし、毎日が二人の記念日になります。傍から見れば「お好きにどうぞ」ということになるのです。

以前、ＣＮＮが伝えたこんなニュースがありました。２００４年１１月１３日、当時 １９歳だった米海兵隊、デービッド・バトル兵長はイラク・ファルージャの戦いで左手と両脚に重傷を負いました。所属小隊と共に、ファルージャ市内の建物に入ろうとしたところを襲撃され、彼以外に海兵隊員１１人が負傷しました。
野戦病院の医師は、激しく損傷した左薬指をバトルさんが失わずに済むよう、結婚指輪を切断しようとしました。しかし、その時にバトル兵長はこう言ったのです「でもそんなことをしたら、結婚指輪が台無しになってしまう。妻ほど強い女性をぼくは知らない。ぼくが派兵されて以来、家で２人分の生活をきちんと面倒みているのは彼女だ。彼女の苦労には報いようとしても報いきれないし、感謝しようとしても感謝しきれない。彼女はぼくのソウルメイト。彼女をどれだけ愛してるか……」と。
本人の意思に従い、医師は薬指を切断しました。後にこのことを聞いた妻のデボンさんはこう言っています。「まさかそんなことをしたなんて、信じられない。最初にいきさつを聞いた時は、すごく怒りました。でも次第に、彼と人生を共にしている自分が、なんて幸せ者なんだろうと気づいたんです」。
この話を聞く多くの者は「指輪なんて切ればよかったのに！」と思うはずです。指輪ならまた手に入れることができるからです。でも指は再びはえてきません。ある人は「ああ、なんとばかなことをしたんだ！」と思うかもしれません。人を愛する時に私達は常識を超えたことをするのです。
時に愛は私達の思いを超えたとんでもないことをするということ、すなわち愛は人を一見、愚かに見える者にする、私達の想像をこえたとんでもないことをさせるのが愛だということを私達が知っているのなら、天地万物を創造された神が私達を本当に愛する故に、私達の意表をつくようなこと、そう、それはあまりにも突拍子のないことで、信じがたきことで、よくよく考えたら愚かにも思えること、そう、すなわち言葉が肉体をとられ、一人の処女の胎に宿ったということ、このとんでもない、理解しがたいことも納得し、信じることができませんか。あえてもう一つ、つけ加えさせていただきますのなら、その命は人が試験管の中で作り出したものでなく、今も無数の命をこの世界に送り出している、その命の源なる神についてお話しているのです。
さださんの歌はこう続きます。
ところが一年二年とたつうち見えてくるんですよ

もし、皆さんが太陽や木々に手を合わせたことがあるのなら、それは皆さんがその背後にある存在を察知しているということです。その感覚を大切にしてください。しかし、同時にその存在が皆さんに個人的に聖書の言葉を通して語りかけていることをどうか知ってください。感覚だけでは限界がありますから。そして、何よりも知っていただきたいことは、この存在が皆さんを愛し、愛し、愛し、愛するがゆえに、私達には到底理解のできない、考えられない、想像できないことを２０００年前になされたことを知ってください。神様がありったけの想いを、あなたに投げつけられた、クリスマスの出来事が今日、ここに集われた方達の生涯の中心に据えられることを心からねがってやみません。お祈りしましょう。

God of presence
Recently I read an interview with a prominent religious scholar which caught my attention. The subject was on the mind and spirituality of the Japanese people and our spirituality as Japanese is said to be determined by our feeling or not feeling the “presence of the gods”. For example, if we were to go deep into a forest we may feel some kind of presence, perhaps some will perceive it as being their ancestors or the Buddha or the gods, and when something bad occurs, some may concluded that it is a curse from the gods or the spirits of the dead because they feel some presence.
In Japan, during the summer there are many programs on prime time television that documents a TV personality going to a haunted hospital or school and these personalities will say something like “I can feel a presence, we shouldn’t go any further than this…” and we Japanese love this kind of program.
First of all why do we feel the presence of some greater power than us? Why do tens of thousands of Japanese people put their hands together before the first sunrise of a new year? This phenomenon is seen not only among the Japanese, but is common to all races, although we have not been taught to have this kind of spirituality. Where ever we go in the world we see images carved in wood and stone
which people use as objects of worship.
In the book of Genesis we see how God created the heavens and the earth and all the different kinds creatures, and the at the last part of the Creation narrative describes how the first man Adam was created: “7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
According to Genesis, all the other creatures have not been “breathed into”, but only the first man Adam received God’s breath and thus “the man became a living being”. In Japan, when a student is under the tutelage of a professor he is described as having the professor’s breath on him. The meaning of this phrase is that the professor’s way of thinking and lifestyle is being passed down to the student.
We see the symbolic account of the creation of man in Genesis, and God has clearly made His mark on us humans who have the breath of God within us. We cannot find any mark on our body which says MBG, or Made by God, but it is clear that God has engraved His mark on our hearts. So although we are not always conscious of our spiritual nature most of the time, when we perceive something greater than us, perhaps in nature(this may be a great big tree or a majestic white snake), even though we are living in a very logical and scientifically advanced modern society, we still worship and put our hands together before these things.
It is important to feel. It is important to be sensitive to our emotions. When one meets his or her life partner for example they may feel something click within them and this kind of intuition is important. But there aren’t too many of us who decided to marry someone just by that one click. We wouldn’t just go up to someone we met for the first time and say “Please marry me, I just felt something click within me” and most would not take it seriously if they were to be proposed this way. Why wouldn’t this work? It is because despite that click, that feeling, that person still does not know anything about the other person.
At the beginning of a new marriage most couples would not say to each other “lets not speak but instead feel each others’ presence”. If the wife says “my husband is busy now, I can feel it in the air” or the husband says “I am worried, I cannot feel my wife’s presence today” a marriage would not work out. The married couple aren’t ghosts. If there is no communication between the couple it will be a very difficult marriage. This is because they have no idea what the other is thinking. So then what is necessary for them to understand one another? The answer is “words”. We use words to let each other know our own thoughts and emotions.
Words
We may say within ourselves “I am hungry, someone would notice and fix me something to eat” or “I’m so downhearted, I hope someone gives me encouragement” but there is no way for this to be perceived by anyone else. Why do our bodies have a mouth and ears? This is for us to speak words with our mouth and hear words with our ears.
God knew from the beginning that we humans have a limited perception of His presence. He knew that He could not communicate His will toward us only through His presence. This is why from the beginning of Creation, God used His words to interact with this world and us humans. The verse that signifies this is seen in the very first page of the Bible: “3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)
In the beginning of the Bible, in the account of the Creation of heavens and earth we see the way in which God will relate to mankind. God created the entire heavens and the earth by His Word and by His Word He also established His relationship with us humans.
As we all know words are very practical tools of expression. After this worship service when you go get some coffee, will you be able to tell what the person next in line is thinking? The answer is obviously no. They may be thinking “what shall I eat for lunch” or “oh no, we’re running out of coffee”. There is no way for us to become completely aware of each others thoughts. This is the limit of our perception. But if they were to say aloud “I want to go eat Chinese food” or “I gotta go get some more coffee” we become aware of what that person is thinking.
Our words reveal what is inside our hearts. And Christianity is something that speaks directly to us through the words written in the Bible. The reason why there are so many churches in this world today is because the Word of God is at the center of Christianity. If it was established only upon our feelings toward an unknown presence it may have become some kind of local folk religion but would have never grown any further. Jesus’ beloved disciple John understood that the way in which God related to us was through His Word, and he wrote this in the beginning of his gospel:
“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5)
When John wrote “In the beginning was the Word”, he must have had in his mind the account of how God created the heaven and the earth through His word which I mentioned earlier.
This thick book called the Bible is split into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament God never appeared in person before mankind. Instead He spoke to them through kings and prophets who received His words and delivered them to the people. Therefore God did not communicate His will through His presence but through tangible words. And as John recorded in His Word was life and His Word was the light of all mankind. His Word was to be the light that shines on our path.
In those times the most prominent representation of the Word of God was the Torah or the Law. The Law stated what to do and what not to do, rules to be followed. Even today we have laws we have to follow and all of these are also recorded in words.
The mountains or trees which may become objects of worship can not tell us how to live by giving us guidelines to follow. Guidelines become clear only when it is given through “specific words”. In the Old Testament God told the people of Israel to obey His word and to never go beyond it so that they may live in happiness. He said that if they remain in His Word they will be protected and receive life and that His Word will be their light.
One of the most significant representation of His Word was the Ten Commandments, which were ten rules that must be obeyed. When we receive these commandments we know what we must do and must not do. And we try to obey these. But what became clear after thousands of years is that we are incapable of keeping these commands because of our very nature as human beings. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Old Testament is the history of mankind’s inability to obey the Word of God. The apostle Paul wrote the following confession as if to represent the conflict we all have within our hearts:
“15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.” (Romans 7:15-20)
God repeatedly spoke His Word to us humans. But we did not listen to God and followed the way that pleased us. On these paths were always confusion and destruction. This went on for thousands of years and then one day, God did the following. This happened in a small, inconspicuous town called Bethlehem. About this event, John who was mentioned earlier wrote the following words:
“14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
Luke gives us a more specific account of this event. He records how the angel spoke to the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem.
“10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”” (Luke 2:10-12)
Is there anything in this passage that is hard to understand? We can imagine the scene that is described here. This is because the event described here did not occur in heaven but on this very earth that we live in. As Luke recorded, the people who were there at that time did not feel the presence of the baby, but they actually saw the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
God, who in the past made His presence know to man through a burning bush, out of a storm, and through the constellations, has taken the form of a human child whom we can actually see and touch.
Now this is where most of you will start to think, “Here it comes, now the preacher is going to start talking about Jesus Christ being born of the Virgin Mary, I can sense where he’s going with this, but God’s only begotten Son being born of a virgin is illogical, this is why I find it hard to believe the Bible…”; if your are saying this to yourself, it is completely understandable. Let us then focus our attention to the following unexpected figure.
Once in a while I listen to songs written by Masashi Sada(famous Japanese folk singer). Sada has a way of skillfully using the words of his songs to speak directly to the listener’s heart. There is one song by him with the very long title “Romance Disorder:Observations of the Onset, Symptoms, and Measures Against This Disease”. He describes the romance between a man and a woman as being a kind of illness and sings about the onset, symptoms, and measures to be taken for this illness. It is truly a song that only a singer like Sada can write.
The following are my observations
of the onset, symptoms, and measures to be taken against
this hormonal disorder called romance,
regardless of age, sex, occupation, postal code
Sada continues to describe each person’s symptoms according to their blood type(side note: there is a popular belief in Japan that a person’s blood type determines his or her personality).
Blood type A: can’t accomplish anything without defiance,
gloomy and always sighing;
Blood type B: inconsiderate of others,
will carelessly stomp through someone’s flower garden;
Blood type AB: Has one opinion today but will have a different one tomorrow,
easily excited and easily bored;
Blood type O: Presuming that everything will work out for them,
are the only ones that are left and forgotten;
Other symptoms include suddenly becoming very kind,
suddenly turning into a poet,
having an inexplicable urge to eat at midnight,
sudden urge to scream at the ocean,
and in some cases young men start balding.
We can say that romance is a sort of allergy
because of the abnormal reactions it causes in certain people
With rare exceptions when in love
a man becomes more manly and a woman more feminine
If one becomes obsessed with love testers
and compatibility questionnaires and the like, they have caught the disease
The lovers want to show
their good side to one another
and they become blind to each others shortcomings
they eat, wear, see, and listen to the same things,
and everyday becomes their anniversary…
When one falls in love, everyone around him sees him as a fool. Love makes him blind and he does foolish things like brush his teeth with shampoo or become obsessed with compatibility tests and become unaware of all of his lover’s shortcomings and he likes to eat, wear, see, and hear everything she likes and everyday is like their anniversary. Those around him can only say “let him do as he wishes”.
The phrase “love is blind” is a perfect description of what happens to a person when he or she falls in love. A person in love is a “fool” for those around them. They are considered “foolish”. And this is not only for romance. A very common thing we see is the doting parent, or in Japanese “foolish parent”. If we are still able to think logically we are not seriously in love. True love lead us into foolishness. The people around that person who is in love cannot stand to look on his or her foolishness. But the person in question is serious to the point of risking their life.
Once I saw a report on CNN which told the story of Marine Lance Corporal David Battle, who in November 13, 2004, when he was 19-years-old, suffered a severe injury to his left hand and legs during a fire fight in Fallujah, Iraq. When he and his unit entered a building they came under attacked and Battle and eleven of his fellow marines wounded.
The field surgeons were about to cut off his wedding ring to save his badly damaged finger. But at that moment he told them, “But that would mean destroying my wedding ring. My wife is the strongest woman I know. She’s basically running two people’s lives since I’ve been gone. I don’t think I could ever repay her or show her how grateful … how much I love my wife, my soul mate.”
As he requested the doctors amputated his finger. After receiving news of his husband, his wife Devon said, “I can’t believe he did that. At first I was mad when he told me, but then I realized how lucky I am to have him in my life.”
When we hear this story, many of us would think “why didn’t he just cut the ring off!”. The ring could have been replaced. But his finger will never grow back. Some of you may think “why did he do such a foolish thing!”. When we love someone, we sometimes do things that are out of the ordinary.
If we know that love can make us do crazy things at times and turn us into fools who act in unimaginable ways, if we know that this is what love does to us human beings, is it not possible for us to believe that God, who created the heavens and the earth, because He loves us so much, did the unexpected, something we never thought of, something hard to believe, and what appears to be so foolish, that the Word became flesh and descended into the womb of a virgin, can we not believe that God did such an extraordinary thing out of His love for us? If I may add another thing, this life was not a life created in a test tube by man, but it was a life which came from the source of all life, God Himself, who continues to bring new life into this world.
The song by Sada closes with the following lines:
After a year or two it becomes clear
that romance is but a struggle with illusions and misunderstandings
Eventually we start to see each other as strangers
grow tired and become silent when we are together
They say romance always disappears
but I believe there are two patterns:
one is when our hearts grow cold,
the other when it changes into a thing called love
Always desiring something is romance, to take away is romance,
Love continues to give, love never changes
All I hope to do is to continue

Beyond feelings, beyond words, this love which hopes to give you everything; to show us His love, God gave us all He had, by giving us His only Son, Jesus Christ, whom He laid in that lowly manger.
If we were to put our hands together before the sun or the trees, it is because we feel the presence of someone who is behind all these things. Please don’t disregard that feeling. But at the same time, please know that that someone is speaking to you personally through the words of the Bible. There is a limit to what we can feel. And above all, I want you to know that this someone loves you so much, that He did something that we can never understand, something we never thought of, something we can’t even imagine, two thousand years ago He did for us the unexpected. My hope is that this unthinkable love that was shown to us by God, when He gave everything He had to us on Christmas Day, that each one of you here today will have this love at the center of your life. Let us Pray.
