「自信」というものはどのように持つことができるのでしょうか。そんなことを書いている本を最近、読みました。そこにはこう書かれていました「自信とは自分との約束を守ることによって持つことができる」。なかなか鋭い言葉です。しかし、果たして自分との約束を守ることができる人はいったいどれだけいるのでしょうか。ある意味、このことは人との約束を守ることよりもはるかに難しいことです。

自力が尽きた時

イースター礼拝
今から２０００年前の早朝、エルサレムのとある場所に向かう二人の女性がいました。さて、安息日が終ったので、マグダラのマリヤとヤコブの母マリヤとサロメとが、行ってイエスに塗るために、香料を買い求めた。2そして週の初めの日に、早朝、日の出のころ墓に行った。3そして、彼らは「だれが、わたしたちのために、墓の入口から石をころがしてくれるのでしょうか」と話し合っていた。4ところが、目をあげて見ると、石はすでにころがしてあった。この石は非常に大きかった。5墓の中にはいると、右手に真白な長い衣を着た若者がすわっているのを見て、非常に驚いた（マルコ１６章２節ー５節）。
このところにいました真っ白な長い衣を来た若者とは神から遣わされたみ使いでした。そのみ使いは彼女達にこう言いました。6「驚くことはない。あなたがたは十字架につけられたナザレ人イエスを捜しているのであろうが、イエスはよみがえって、ここにはおられない。ごらんなさい、ここがお納めした場所である。7今から弟子たちとペテロとの所へ行って、こう伝えなさい。イエスはあなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行かれる。かねて、あなたがたに言われたとおり、そこでお会いできるであろう、と」（マルコ１６章６節、７節）。
亡くなられたイエス様に香料を塗ろうとやってきた女性達は墓の中にイエス様の亡骸を見出すことはできませんでした。彼女達はそこで御使いからこんな言葉を聞いたのです。『今から弟子たちとペテロとの所へ行って、こう伝えなさい。イエスはあなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行かれる』（７）。
この言葉が女性達に語られている時、当の弟子達はどこにいたのでしょうか。彼らはエルサレムのどこかに身を隠していました。そう、彼らはその数日前に捕えられていくイエス様を見捨て、イエス様が鞭打たれ、十字架にかかっている間もどこかで息をひそめていたのです。イエスの弟子であるということで、彼らにも危険がおよぶのを彼らは恐れたからです。
私達の関心はここで御使いがペテロを名指ししているところに向けられます。なぜ、ペテロは名指しされたのでしょうか。その時ペテロは物音にもビクッとするような時を過ごしていたに違いありません。そして、その時に彼が間違いなく何度も繰り返し思い起こしていたこと、それはイエス・キリストが十字架にかかる数時間前の出来事でした。
「その時、イエスは弟子たちに言われた、「今夜、あなたがたは皆わたしにつまづくであろう。「わたしは羊飼いを打つ。そして、羊の群れは散らされるであろう」と書いてあるからである。しかし、わたしはよみがえってから、あなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行くであろう」。するとペテロはイエスに答えて言った、「たとい、みんなの者があなたにつまづいても、わたしは決してつまづきません」。イエスは言われた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。今夜、鶏が鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」。ペテロは言った、「たといあなたと一緒に死なねばならなくなっても、あなたを知らないなどとは、決して申しません」。弟子たちもみな同じように言った（マタイ２６：３１―３５）。
これだけ威勢のいいことを言った手前、ペテロはこの直後、イエス様が捕えられていった時、他の弟子達が逃げてしまった後も、どうにかイエス様の後について行って、大祭司の中庭まで、もぐりこんだのです。しかし、そこであの出来事が起きました。
69ペテロは外で中庭にすわっていた。するとひとりの女中が彼のところにきて、「あなたもあのガリラヤ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。70するとペテロは、みんなの前でそれを打ち消して言った、「あなたが何を言っているのか、わからない」。71そう言って入口の方に出て行くと、ほかの女中が彼を見て、そこにいる人々にむかって、「この人はナザレ人イエスと一緒だった」と言った。72そこで彼は再びそれを打ち消して、「そんな人は知らない」と誓って言った。73しばらくして、そこに立っていた人々が近寄ってきて、ペテロに言った、「確かにあなたも彼らの仲間だ。言葉づかいであなたのことがわかる」。74彼は「その人のことは何も知らない」と言って、激しく誓いはじめた。するとすぐ鶏が鳴いた。75ペテロは「鶏が鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うであろう」と言われたイエスの言葉を思い出し、外に出て激しく泣いた（マタイ２６章６９節-７５節）。
忘れようにも忘れられません。それは数時間前のことで、イエス様との会話の余韻も、大祭司の中庭のたき火の温もりも、女中の生々しい言葉も、すべて彼の心に鮮明に刻まれているのですから。イエス様に語りかけた時、彼の心は自信で満ちていました。男気で満ちていました。しかし、語りかけられた何気ない言葉で全てが吹き飛びました。イエス様がかねてペテロに言われたとおり、彼は三度、イエスを否んだのです。いいえ、イエスなどは知らないと彼は激しく誓ったのです。このところに弁解の余地は全くありません。
ペテロは覚えていたでしょうか。あの勇ましい言葉を語った時、イエス様がそっと彼に伝えた言葉を。「わたしは羊飼いを打つ。そして、羊の群れは散らされるであろう」と書いてあるからである。しかし、わたしはよみがえってから、あなたがたより先にガリラヤへ行くであろう」（マタイ２６：３１）。
そう、その言葉通りに事は進展し、その時と同じ約束が再び、神の使いから「ペテロに伝えなさい」という言葉と共に女達に伝えられたのです。ヨハネ２１章はほどなくして、イエス様が言われたガリラヤの湖に立つペテロと仲間の弟子達の姿を書き記しています。
3シモン・ペテロは彼らに言った。「わたしは漁に行く」。彼らは言った。「わたしたちも一緒に行きましょう」。彼らは出かけて、小舟に乗り込んだ。しかし、その夜は何もとれなかった。4夜が明けそめた時、イエスは岸べに立たれた。けれども弟子達には、それがイエスであることが分からなかった。5イエスは彼らに言われた、「子どもたちよ。食べるものがありませんね」彼らは答えた。「はい、ありません」6イエスは彼らに言われた。「舟の右側に網をおろしなさい。そうすれば、とれます」。そこで彼らは網をおろした。すると、おびただしい魚のために、網を引き上げることができなかった。7そこで、イエスの愛されたあの弟子がペテロに言った。「主です」。するとシモン・ペテロは主であると聞いて、裸だったので、上着をまとって、湖に飛び込んだ。8しかし、ほかの弟子たちは魚の満ちたその網を引いて、小舟でやってきた。陸地から遠くなく、１００メートル足らずの距離だったからである。（ヨハネ２１章３節ー８節 新改訳）。
彼らは一晩中、自分達が“知りつくした”湖に網を投げ続けました。「知り尽くした」と言えば、それはまさしくペテロが自分自身に抱いていた思いでした。彼は思っていたに違いありません。「俺は自分のことはよく分かっている」。「俺は言ったことを成し遂げることができる男だ」。あの時、彼の心には確かにそんな自負心がありました。しかし、彼はそんな自分に裏切られたのです。
「自信」というものはどのように持つことができるのでしょうか。そんなことを書いている本を最近、読みました。そこにはこう書かれていました「自信とは自分との約束を守ることによって持つことができる」。なかなか鋭い言葉です。しかし、果たして自分との約束を守ることができる人はいったいどれだけいるのでしょうか。ある意味、このことは人との約束を守ることよりもはるかに難しいことです。そう、ペテロはイエスとの約束、自分に課した約束、この二つを破って、自分の郷里、ガリラヤ湖に戻ってきたのです。
いくらかの収穫があれば、ペテロの気持ちも少しは気が晴れたのかもしれません。しかし、その晩、彼は何も捕まえることができずに、夜が明けようとしていました。彼らはかつての漁師、湖底の様子まで知り尽くしているそのホームグラウンドで、その道のプロが一晩中がんばったにもかかわらず、一匹も収穫がなかったのです。まさしく、その様はその時の彼らの自力の限界をあらわしていました。ただ彼らには疲労だけが残されたのです。しかし、その時に岸から声が聞こえました。『食べるものがありませんね』（５）。彼らはその質問に対して「はい、ありません」と答えました。すると岸に立つ者は言うのです。「舟の右のほうに網をおろしてみなさい。そうすれば何か獲れるであろう」
皆さん、言うまでもなく彼らは舟の右にも左にも網を下したのですが、その夜は何もとれなかったのです。しかし、彼らは言われた通りにしました。そうしましたら、おびただしい魚の魚が捕れたのです。捕れ過ぎて、それを引き上げることすら出来なかったのです。
「食べるものがありませんね」という言葉には多くの意味が込められています。一晩中、必死に漁をしていた彼らに対して語られたこの言葉は、ペテロにとって、自分自身の姿を言い表す言葉となりました。それはまさしく、ヨハネ１５章５節で「あなたたちは私を離れては何一つできない」というイエス様の言葉が語りかけることです。自分の力でイエスを守り抜くのだと誓ったペテロ、しかし、彼は数時間後には「イエスなどは知らない」と激しく誓いました。自分で言ったことを実行することもできない自分の本当の姿。イエス様の言葉はまさしく「あなたは自分で言ったことすら成し遂げられませんね」とペテロに語られているということです。
この後の出来事として聖書は「彼らが陸に上ってみると、炭火がおこしてあって、その上に魚がのせてあり、またそこにパンがあった」（ヨハネ２０章９節）と書いています。誰が炭火を起こしたのですか。誰か魚を焼き、パンを備えていたのですか。そうです、イエス様です。そのイエス様の前にペテロは座りました。冷え切った体にこの炭火はなんと温かかったことでしょうか。一晩働き続けた後の空腹にこのパンと魚はなんとありがたいものだったでしょうか。
かつてペテロは大祭司の中庭でたき火に当たりながら、イエス様が言われた通り、三度イエス様を拒んだのです。しかし、この度、イエス様は炭火の側でペテロの弱さや裏切りを咎めることなく、三度「わたしを愛するか」とペテロにたずねました。三度、否んだ一つ一つを全て赦されるかのように、イエス様はペテロに彼がイエスを拒んだ数だけ聞いたのです。ペテロは「わたしを愛するか」という問いに応える度に、自分が三度イエスを否んだことが許されていくことを感じたことでしょう。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達はそれぞれの人生、色々な所を行き巡って今朝、ここに導かれてきています。ペテロのような義勇心と同じものをもって、生きてこようとしてきた方達がいると思います。頼れるのは自分の力だけだと信じて、必死に生きて来た方達がいると思います。妻、夫を愛して、子供達を愛して、家族をしあわせにしよう、誰にも真実に生きようと自分に課していたこともあることでしょう。しかし、もしかしたら、そのようなことを成し遂げようと願ってきたけれど、実際、それをすることなどできなかったという方、いませんか。主の前に「あなたにはできませんでしたね」という言葉を真摯に受け止めている方、いらっしゃいませんか。「わたしを離れては何一つできませんね」と言われる言葉が聞こえてきませんか。
ペテロは自分の力の限界を知りました。それを知らされたのは彼の人生の原点となるガリラヤ湖でした。イエス様はそこに彼よりも先に行かれ、彼を待っていました。ガリラヤ湖はかつてイエス様がペテロに声をかけた場所であり、そこから彼はイエス様に従った場所です。彼はその同じ場所で再び、イエス様の温もりに触れ、原点から再献身するのです。
イエス・キリストは死を打ち破り、よみがえられ、そしてペテロに会われました。イエス・キリストの復活が意味することは、私達もペテロのようにその託されている人生を再献身してこのイエス様と歩み始めることができることを意味します。今朝、私達は墓に眠る人間がかつてなしたことを話しているのではありません。今も私達と共におられるお方が私達に語りかけている、その言葉を今、私達は聞いているのです。徒労感をかかえたまま、冷え切った体のまま、イエス様が備えてくださっている炭火の前に、あなたも腰を下ろし、主の語りかけに応えてこれからの人生を歩んでいきませんか。お祈りしましょう。
Easter Message: “When Our Own Strength runs out.”

On an early morning, about 2000 years ago, there were two women going to a certain place in Jerusalem. Mark 16:1-5 reads as follows: “When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.”
Here, a young man dressed in a white robe was an angel sent by God. “6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ “
Those women, who came to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices, could not find Jesus’ body. Here they heard the angel saying, “Go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee.’”
When this word was being spoken by the angel, where were those disciples? They were hiding in some place in Jerusalem. That is right. They abandoned Jesus when he was arrested several days ago. And they were hiding somewhere, even when Jesus was whipped and crucified. They were afraid of facing dangers just because they were the disciples of Jesus.
Here, we are curious about why the angel mentioned Peter’s name aside from “disciples”. Why? Because, Peter was spending such a nervous time that he might jump up with a little noise. And at that time, he must be thinking about the incidence that took place several hours before Jesus Christ was crucified. About this incidence, Mathew 26 writes as follows:
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: ” ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 34 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.”
Though Peter once escaped with other disciples when Jesus was arrested, he somehow followed Jesus into the courtyard of the High Priest, since he declared such a courageous word. Then, the incident happened there.
69 Now, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. 70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Mathew 26:69-75)
Peter could not forget it, even if he tried to. Because it happened only several hours ago, and his conversation with Jesus still lingered in his ears, and the warmth of the bonfire in the courtyard and the voice of the servant girl were still clearly etched in his mind. When he talked with Jesus, his heart was full of confidence and courage. But, with the voice of the servant girl, everything was blown away. As Jesus prophesized, he denied Jesus three times. Even more, he called down curses on himself and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” There was no excuse for him.
I wonder if Peter remembered the words of Jesus that were whispered to him, when he declared his courageous word. Jesus said, “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” (Mathew 26:31-32)
So, the things developed as prophesized, and the same promise again was delivered to the women through the angel to Peter. John 21 describes the scene of Peter and the disciples standing on the shore of Lake Galilee, as the fulfillment of the promise. John 21:3-8 reads as follows:
3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.
All night, they were casting a net into the lake that they knew very well. Speaking of knowing well, it was a thought that Peter had about himself. He must have thought, “I know myself very well”. “I’m a man who can accomplish what I said”. At that time when he declared the courageous word, there was certainly such a confidence in his heart. However, he was betrayed by his self-confidence.
I wonder how people can have such a thing as “self-confidence”. Recently, I read a book written about such a thing. The book says, “It is possible to have ‘self-confidence’ by keeping a promise to one-self.” It is quite a keen word. However, I wonder how many people can keep a promise to one-self? In a sense, it is much more difficult to keep a promise to one-self than to keep a promise to others. So, Peter came back to his hometown, the Sea of Galilee with the two broken promises, one to Jesus, and the other to himself.
If there was some harvest, Peter might have felt a little relief. However, that night, he could not catch any fish, and it was about to become dawn. They were former fishermen. At their home ground where they knew everything about the lake, even the state of the bottom of the lake, they toiled hard in the professional way all night, but they could not catch even one fish. Indeed, they were in the state of exhaustion of their own power at that time. Only the fatigue was left to them. However, they heard a voice from the shore at that time saying, “Don’t you have anything to eat?” They answered, “No, there isn’t”. Then, the man who stood on the shore said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.”
Brothers and sisters, of course they did cast the net to the right side and the left side of the boat, but they could not catch any fish on that night. However, they followed exactly what they were told to do. Then, they caught such numerous fish that they could not raise it up to the boat.
The word, “Don’t you have anything to eat?” has many meanings. The word that had been spoken to those who toiled to fish all night, became the word that expressed himself for Peter. It is indeed what is written in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” That is the word of Jesus. Peter who swore to defend Jesus in his own power, also vigorously swore that he did not know Jesus, several hours later. Peter realized himself being unable to accomplish what he said. And indeed, Jesus was talking to Peter, “apart from me you can do nothing.”
As the event took place later, the Bible writes in John 20:9 as follows: “When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.” Who prepared the fire of burning coals? Who provided the fish and bread? That’s right, Jesus did. Peter sat down before Jesus. How warm was the fire of burning coals for his bitterly cold body? How appreciable were the fish and bread for the empty stomach of Peter, who had worked all night?
Once Peter denied Jesus three times beside the bonfire in the courtyard of the High Priest, as Jesus said. But, this time Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” three times beside the fire of burning coals, without blaming the weakness and denial of Peter. As if Jesus forgave each one of Peter’s denial of Jesus, he asked the same question three times. Every time he responded to the question, “Do you love me?”, Peter must have felt that he was forgiven each one of his denials.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, we have been led here this morning, after going through various places and experiences of our lives. I think that there are some people among us who tried to live with a self-reliant spirit like Peter. There might be those who believe only in their own power, and tried to live heir lives very diligently, wishing to love wife or husband, and love children, and trying to build a happy family. Someone might have imposed his or herself to live in truth to everyone. But, perhaps there might be someone who could not actually accomplish those wishes. Is there anyone here who sincerely accept the word, “You could not do it” before the Lord. Don’t you hear the voice of Jesus saying, “apart from me you can do nothing”?
Peter had known the limitation of his power. He experienced it at the Sea of Galilee that was the origin of his life. Jesus went ahead of Peter, and was waiting for him. The Sea of Galilee is the place where Jesus once called upon Peter, and he followed Jesus. And, once again he rededicated himself from that place of origin.
Jesus Christ conquered death, was resurrected, and met Peter. The meaning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is that it is possible for us to rededicate our lives that have been entrusted, like Peter did, and to begin to walk with Jesus. This morning, we are not talking about the things accomplished once before by one who is sleeping in a tomb. We are listening to the word of the one who is with us and talking to us right now. Just as you are now with a sense of futility, and with a bitterly cold body, why don’t you sit down before the fire of burning coals that has been prepared by Jesus, and listen to the word of the Lord, and in response, walk with Him throughout your life from now on?

５）ヨハネ２１章３節ー９節を読みましょう。ペテロはガリラヤ湖で生まれ育った湖を知り尽くした漁師です。その彼が一晩中、漁をしても収穫を得ることができなかったということは何を暗示していますか。
６）イエス様は収穫のなかった彼らに対して「食べるものがありませんね」（５）と言われました。この言葉は私達に何を語りかけますか。イエス様が言われた「あなたたちは私を離れては何一つできない」（ヨハネ１５章５節）という言葉をあなたはどのように心に受け止めていますか。
７）冷え切った体と徒労感と空腹で陸に戻ったペテロに対してイエス様は炭火を起こし、焼いた魚とパンを用意して待っておられ、その所で三度、ペテロに「わたしを愛するか」と問われました。ペテロはこの出来事をどのように心に受け止めましたか。
８）ペテロにとってイエス様の復活にはどんな意味がありましたか。イエス様の復活は私達にとってどんな意味がありますか。
